Hi,

So I need to have a large chip sorted (door looks to have been opened against another car and chipped by the previous owner. I took it to the local paint shop and he stated that silver is not really all that fixable and to fix it he would need to respray the entire back quarter?

If so that's annoying but is he right?

Regards

Yup, silver or most colours these days require a blend in to the next panel.
If it’s a 200 quid snotter then don’t worry, if it’s a 100k Aston then stop being tight.

I’m calling cobblers on that.
Big bodyshops can’t be bothered with chips. If they aren’t respraying half a car it’s not worth their while.
Find a place that do small repairs or learn to diy.
Not hard if you watch a few YouTubes

I though silver was hard to match.

Metallic silver is horrible to try and match in modern, water-based colours. I would try a touch up stick and a wet sand to flatten it out.

As above, silver is an absolute sod to match, I've had a few silver cars that, as far I knew, had never had paint yet some panels always looked a slightly different shade from certain angles, especially under street lights.

To be fair I think any metallic is hard to match, and always has been!

I went to Thatcham Research back in the early 80s and they had a MK2 Granada door that had been painted with stripes in every variation of Ford Oyster Gold - there were 12 stripes.

My brother paints . It’s very true silver especially but most metallics are pretty impossible to get a good finish unless whole panel is refinished ! Not every expert is trying to rip you off.
