Not many of the 1.8 GTE's about nowadays, just doing bits and pieces on this, bought it earlier this year having wanted one for a while, my first car was a mk2 Astra way back in 89

Good find. As you say not many left now.
There used to be a b plate black example in my nearby town but not seen it recently.
Keep us up to date with progress.

I like that, not feeling the hub caps but they are original I think.

Dad bought one of those not long before I was born, B431EAK.

I think you're right - alloys were still an option even on sporty variants back then - many XR3i and Golf GTI came on steels.

Struggling with pics atm, upload says file too big, just doing a few bits, sorting niggles etc, wheel trims were standard on 1.8, 2.0 gte had alloys standard, I like them tbh, not keen on the alloys, probably going to do the rear beam etc over the winter, just needs a refresh

At last smile I do like the mk2 gte. Had a 1.8 b reg in my teens then the obvious upgrade I thought was a 16v gte. Wish I never sold that as I was only the second owner on it at the time.
Below is my former 16v gte

Very cool. You don’t see many 2.0 GTEs, let alone 1.8 GTEs

I had Bordeaux Red 2L 8v myself but my brother had one like below which someone is selling - in todays' crazed prices of anything interesting I didn't think the asking price was shocking to be honest!

My first car was a mk2 astra, albeit a 1.3 base (pre-merit!). Would love another one for reminiscing- I bet they feel featherweight!

Lovely. thumbup

I borrowed a purple GTE from a mate back in 1994 that had suffered a broken engine, so it had an SRi engine in it. 50 miles or so later in the dark the digital dash went blank. eek

But I made it home - although the next morning it died at a petrol station when the cam seized. After I'd put petrol in it. mad

Still it could have been worse - it got replaced by an XR4i!

Love an astra mk2.

My dad used to own a GTE 2.0 16V, Reg G123 TWS. rusty old heap even back then. Think he sold it to someone who ripped the engine out for a corsa or some other conversion, as it wasnt long after that it disappeared from the vehicle enquiries etc. Shame.

Lovely car! Really does look great in white with the white wheel trims too!

Keep it as nature intended please!

That Champion GTE picture is the holy grail of mk2 astras, but yours is just as special being so early and original!

Lovely.

It’s a such a shame these got butchered for the engines. It’s good to see one that looks in factory condition.

I'm that sad that I took one look at that pic and knew it was a Champion.... then started to dribble.
I love the Mk2 Astra, had a few SRi and GTe models back in the day and there's always room for one in my lottery win garage!
