I’m looking at replacing my aging 220k Passat Estate with the same again

Looking at an 18 plate GT Estate 150 TDI for about £19k.

Car will do about 15k pa and used for commuting and airport runs. I have some nice (thirsty) cars to use for fun stuff so happy to stick to the 150. Felt the 1.6 would be too slow

Anyway, seen a few 1.5 TSI 150 cars slight cheaper than the diesel.

What are these like? On paper similar performance but over say 5 years and 75k would the better resale value and smoother engine compensate for the lack of torque and higher fuel consumption?

I had the 2.0 Tsi 220 and it was great (so if thats' an option go for it), then i had the 1.5 Tsi in a superb and it was ok. I'm not a big fan of diesels but for the size of car the diesel is probably a better bet, the little petrol did need revving out a fair bit to get going.

Thanks folks. Car will be a workhorse sitting along side a very fast car, so not bothered about performance. That said it sounds like the petrol might be a bit slow.

Will go for a 2.0 TDI DSG. 50+ mpg will be nice too

I've had the diesel (in a Superb) and I've now got the 1.5 petrol

Get the diesel

The petrol is ok and was my only option for a Arteon, but the torque of the diesel makes it nicer to drive.
