I'd love to do the same. The problem is finding the vehicle at the right money. You may need to expand your budget.
I was at Brightwells auction about a month ago, a 3.2 Carrera Targa in very run-down condition (exposed very rusty bits on wings suggesting worse under the remaining paint) sold for £24k. I'm not well up on Porsches so I don't know if there was something particularly special about that car, and their web site doesn't really allow direct links to specific vehicles. (it looks much better in that photo than it did in real life, and the details page won't open for me at the moment to see if they show more detailed photos).

No doubt somebody will be along to correct me, but that is a wide-body (desirable) targa (not so desirable as a FHC) 3.2 (nice) with rust (not so nice). My dad's neighbour had a much more dilapidated - looking 912 on his driveway: left hand drive, not much paint left, quite rusty but very early (c1966 I reckon). As my dad knew all the locals because he looked after most of their gardens, I jokingly said to him once "If you ever get a chance to buy that sensibly, do it". "What is sensible?" "Under £10,000" I said. The car disappeared a few weeks later, presumably sold.
OP may need to re-evaluate to achieve his / her dream, I fear.

Barn finds are still out there... you just need to be constantly looking and talking to everyone you meet / know. Follow up on every lead you sniff out and go the extra mile... there are still cars slumbering in out of the way places ripe for resurrection.
By the way, if tempted to venture into the likes of Beverley Hills Car Club, it pays to do your research before buying over the phone or 'net without inspecting... have at look at THIS thread on early911.com and decide for yourself if that's where you want to spend your money.

It's with the guys at Parr right now getting the once over and getting all sorted for MOT purposes. Car is straight, matching, rust free and about as wild as it could be for me personally - maybe I got lucky. But saying that the price was right, and I have budget to make it exaclty what it should be over the next few years. Thing is in the USA as far as I can understand, if the car moves its allowed on the road. So expect anything from BHCC to need something - but the inventory is a great way to waste 30 minutes.
Even if you could find 'a Porsche in a bad condition like that for about 5-12k $' have you considered what it might cost to just make roadworthy, never mind restore? The usual reason for a 911 to be cheap is awful body rot to which they succumb just like any other steel car, then there is the astronomical cost of parts, nothing Porsche is cheap unless there is a very good reason for it to be so!
