Beeping

Why does the car beep when we open the door with engine off yet leave the lights on? They turn off with ignition so...?

I think it beeps if you leave the sidelights on.
If it's in the "auto" position, lights will switch off automatically with no beep.

Talking about 2005-2009 era (for sure).
