My ageing le creuset rosewood waiters friend is on its way out (hinge pin is wearing away). Before ordering another the same anyone suggest a "better" replacement? Looking for something traditional, are the Laguiole ones better?

The Le Creuset one looks nice. We have a bombproof French one but couldn't find anywhere online, we got it in a random shop years ago.

Anyway, this is what you need.

I recently bought a Barvivo, because given all they do is unscrew corks, I can't see the need to spend more.

It works just fine, looks pretty enough, and one friend accused me of spending "Probably seventy quid, knowing you..."

I've had one of these forever (it feels like):

https://www.lecreuset.co.uk/lm250-lever-model-foil...

It's great.

When I acquired this one there weren't any knock offs, but you can get quite a few similar things now I believe.

(Doesn't do normal bottle opening duty mind).

I had one of those and within a month it stopped pulling the cork, and just unwound itself when you lifted the lever.

There is no need to get anything fancy or expensive just to open a bottle of wine. A £1 waiters friend will easily do the job.

We have a similar one to that and it’s great. Those big cumbersome contraptions are more hassle than they are worth.

I have one of these.

le creuset advance

Not a recommendation due to the price but it has opened far more bottles of wine than I would care to admit to my wife.

Looks better made than the le creuset, I'll add to the kids Xmas list for me.

I would concur with this.

You can, of course, get nicely made ones as pictured above but they perform the task no better.

Except they do... opening maybe 20-30 bottles a night tableside you soon learn what does and doesn't work.

I use one of these at present. Well, a similar and no doubt even cheaper version. Doesn't get much more fool proof.

'Waiter's friend' is fine but there's a small risk of non vertical alignment of the screw after a few...
