Hi all,

Replaced my front pads on my M140i a couple of months ago. Allowed the pads to bed in for a couple hundred miles and all was well.

In the last couple of weeks (6 weeks after the pad change) there's been an intermittent vibration from the brakes at higher speeds. The issue is completely unnoticeable most days when commuting, however it begins to become apparent when braking from 70 or above. When I first started to notice the vibration it was a light pulse through the pedal and so looking through old topics on here and other forums led me to believe it was pad deposits on the discs - likely due to the new pads.

I tried to clear the deposits off by finding a quiet stretch of road and doing 8 or so emergency stops from 70 in quick succession - not coming to a complete halt! This has actually increased the vibration... to the point the car judders when braking from 80+ rather than just the pedal. The amount of vibration seems to vary too. This morning slowing from 70 there was barely any vibration at all.

Initial thought is warped discs but they were fine before I changed the pads, and I've been going easy on them with the exception of trying to clear off the deposits over the weekend. Car has done 29.5k.

Any thoughts? It's under warranty but BMW are pain to deal with and I'd imagine it wouldn't be covered.
It's due a brake fluid change in February so likely on the original fluid still.

IMO there's no such thing as warped discs; just pad deposits. But you said you've done some hard braking to clear those? Not saying it isn't the discs, but generally it isn't... You could always get them checked out with a run-out gauge to see how far out they are though, if at all?

Just wondering if one of the calipers is sticking a bit; or if there's cack between the disc and hub creating a wobble at speeds etc?

Track rod ends, inner tie rods and suspension arms/bushes all in good order? They can cause similar issues too, so worth getting it all checked out smile

Yeah I've tried clearing deposits with hard braking - it made the vibration worse so I wonder if its maybe removed some but not all of the deposits... if that's plausible.

I've got a decent indy nearby so I could have them checked there - good shout. I'd imagine the track rod ends, tie rods and arms would be fine as the car's relatively new however if the caliper isn't sticking and its not the discs then these will be my next points to look at. thumbup

Hadn't considered this, cheers. May be worth just booking it in with the dealer if it's possibly an issue rather than just warped discs/pad deposits. Just hope they don't try and use the pad change as a get-out.

Ideally they'll take the caliper off and make sure that the piston moves freely and the sliders move as well, freely. It's an easy job and brake lines don't need to be disconnected etc

Thought I'd update this incase the thread shows up in searches etc.

BMW wanted a (rather hefty) fee to look at it under warranty since consumables aren't covered.

Jacked the front of the car up, span the offending wheel and could hear the pad catching the disc at a certain point of rotation. Applied the brakes a few times and they seem to be operating as they should - so as unlikely as it is I think the discs are warped.

I removed the wheel and have the disc a good look, can't see any markings of pad deposits. Might just order a pair of front discs and hopefully be done with it as the cost of genuine discs online is only a 20 quid more than the fee BMW wanted to investigate.

Sounds a sensible route, especially if they are substantially worn. I must say, I am very light on the brakes, and at high speed I rarely use them, preferring to observe well ahead. I only us them at junctions, roundabouts and coming to a full stop. In stop start traffic, I go to manual on the sport auto, the engine braking does the job then.

In my experience the culprit has invariably been the pads and not the discs, as just like in your case, with existing discs and new pads the issue had popped up. My adopted solution was to swap the inferior pads for a higher quality make and with time and mileage the old pads' deposits would eventually wear off. It takes a few thousand miles, so patience is required. Happened twice. Sticking with Jurid and Textar from now on.

I prefer using the manual mode around town and in traffic too! The box seems to hold the gears a little sometimes, to the point it gets to 3.5k revs and I back off the throttle expecting it to change up. Its fine elsewhere though.

The pads were cheaper Brembos rather than the Jurids, so this seems likely too. Just getting to the time of year where I don't want to be out messing with the car - thinking the safe option is maybe doing the discs and pads on the front with Jurid and Textar as you've mentioned. I've spotted a listing online for both at £180 so I think I'll go down that route.

Would be gutted if I did just the discs or pads and it didn't stop the issue!
