We have been speaking about this in other threads but I think it needs its own one considering this trawler was off the coast of Britain.

https://www.itv.com/news/2019-10-03/the-super-traw...

16:41 to 17:14 shows the fact the nets can hold 13 Jumbo Jets and also what else gets caught. A bit graphic just to warn.

Same one Australia banned from their waters a few years ago?

Seems totally legit. Nice little top up of stocks before 31st.

Exactly the same trawler.

It's legal but you really have to wonder when the UK fishermen have such strict quota's

As for the fish stocks. Crazy.

I'm guessing they bought out a bunch of other boats to get their quota, then combined them for this ship. I'm pretty sure that's what most factory ships do in fact, not just Dutch flagged ones.

It's not the only one - there's another (I'll try and find the name) operating too.

Locally, there's serious concern and anger.

Small boats have been pushed out to open water to protect stocks. Beach recreational fishers can only take one fish per day, for part of the year.

Yet this ship can come along, and indescriminately take not only the entire fking ball of mackerel, but the shoal of bass underneath predating on it - with different rules on by catch that means if the small boats came anywhere near the loss they'd be fined and shut down...

Until the beginning of this year, my next door neighbour was a fifth gen fisherman. He can see real, material and long lasting harm beyond done by thus single trip. The entire Sussex fleet won't take 250t a day - this thing will do that every day for a month uninterrupted... Before fking off to some unstripped grounds a few thousand miles away to rinse and repeat...

You can totally understand the anger.

Just find it incredible that this is legal considering it's killing all manner of different marine life as well.

Anything in the UK legal artery that can shut it down in UK waters?

Where is the Extinction rebellion lot ?

Oh that's right, in the way of the general public in a town or city, not actually targeting this sort of st at all.

If you are so vexed why don’t you and your mates get in your boats and protest as they did in Australia.

Maybe after Brexit we can tell them to fek off, he says hopefully.

So here is the conundrum.

The UK has to stand on its own two feet and require its businesses to be as efficient as possible.

The problem is that from a profitability standpoint this vessel is probably very effective.

The other big problem is that UK Fishermen’s chose to sell rather than buy quota, thus disadvantaging themselves.

Is this vessel damaging to fish stocks, almost certainly yes.

How do we manage this situation. Legislation. Will it happen even after we have left the Eu. Highly unlikely in the short term, but we can but hope.

I wonder if this vessel fishes in French waters, or perhaps they were a bit wiser and didn’t sell the family silver.

Just reading a discard list form a similar ship (Geelong Star) in Australia. In one trip it trashed 12 tons it could not keep.

Cannot make a difference. Australia is sovereign over what's allowed in it's waters. We are not.

Nope its not. Having to throw back dead fish into the sea when you have gone over your quota makes so much sense.

You really wonder who comes up with these stupid rules.

Yeah, came across that looking at the super trawlers. Not good either way but the scale of these super trawler things was off my radar. It just adds in orders of magnitude.
