Hello

I'm in the market for a new TV, 60-65 inch I think because the current 40" seems a bit small for the 3.5m ish viewing distance. Also my current telly (Samsung series 6) is over 10 years old and will be moved to a different room for backup duties.

I was just going to get another Samsung mid range but read that LG make the panels anyway? My main concern is I don't want too much OS and other proprietary crap built into the TV nor that it will be spying on me (cookies, webcam, microphones).

Can anyone recommend such a unicorn ? Budget around 1500-2k max but cheaper is always better. Can I buy a basic panel and fit the android stuff myself via a fire TV stick ? Oh, I need 2x satellite ideally.

Also thinking of getting the kids a games console - they are 2 girls aged 8 & 10 - xbox or playstation? They have a wii already. Maybe thats fine for now until they are older.

Any insights welcome smile

Thanks
Bm

Our kids (now 8 and 11) have had an Xbox One for a couple of years now. There are loads of appropriate games - the various Lego games (City, Batman, Jurassic Park, Worlds etc.) are great, Crash Bandicoot trilogy is fab.

The Lego games are great, even as a parent, I especially enjoyed the Indiana Jones one. It has a lot of jokes that require some movie knowledge (Indie's fear of snakes for example), so for the girls if they like HP, the Lego Harry Potter are great games as well.

As for OLED vs non-oled, at your budget, go for the best non-oled you can get. Most Samsungs have a "game mode" and are pretty ok in terms of input lag (important in faster-paced games). Personally, I wouldn't get anything over 40ms, controls start to feel like poking a knife in butter by then (if that makes sense).

Here's a website that lists a lot of models, you can probably find a similar model to the one your looking for for reference:

I wouldn't care too much about "smartness", your TV will hopefully outlast it's smart stuff by a decade. Just get a Chromecast/Roku or the like once you get past it.
If it's youtube/netflix you're looking for, the Xbox itself is pretty good as well (although I think it has no IR receiver?).

Great thanks for the replies ! Sounds like xbox is the way to go. It'll be plugged into the old 40" not the new telly btw.

TV I'd prefer get something without the smart stuff because of the monitoring concerns rather than the tech itself. A plain dumb panel with hdmi inputs would be perfect.

OLED - what's a sensible budget for a 60" panel? Every oled I've seen has looked superb.

Just turn off the networking. Nothing can monitor you if the networking is turned off.

I was reading somewhere the other day about someone buying a Prosumer panel as opposed to a Consumer TV - no tuning/wifi/speakers etc but they claimed it was a superior panel than a TV? The Home Cinema & HiFi forum will get you a better response on your query though.

(I've been reading up on Raspberry Pi/Pihole, and IoT devices apparently go totally overboard trying to get a response to check in if you deny/block them, Samsung TV's supposedly really bad for it? And they're checking in multiple times per day)
