I've got a 5 year old PC with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti OC - 2 GB graphics card. It's been fine for Farcry4 - but having recently got Ghost Recon Wildlands it's struggling to run the level of detail I'd like. I don't seem to be memory bound (16gb is more than enough) - just running out of GPU capacity, I think.

Would simply swapping out the card for something like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01N33SOXU do the trick, or am I missing something?

Thanks in advance smile

I know nothing about GPUs or if it would work on your system, but saw this on Reddit (includes a game and xbox pass) https://www.box.co.uk/Gigabyte-Radeon-RX-590-GAMIN...

A 1050Ti will give you a bit of a boost to be sure, but it's old tech now.

The 1660 is probably the sweet spot for price/performance right now

and although it's a little more expensive, you won't outgrow is anything like so quickly as you would the 1050Ti.

That's where my money would be going in any case.

What CPU are you using? There will be a point where the CPU becomes the bottleneck.

For example - an I5 4460 will be ok with a 1660/1660ti for 1080/1440 gaming, anything above will be limited by CPU.

At 5 years old I'm assuming it is a Haswell system.

Also check your PSU has the right connection and power requirements before you buy.

Thanks folks, smile

Donbot: It's a 6 core AMD FX6350 on a Gigabyte FA-78LMT Motherboard - it's PCI-E, so believe no connectivity problems for recent cards.

I have an upgraded Corsair CX600 PSU so I believe ok for power.

Deckster: - I'd rather spend £200 on card than £1100 on a new PC, thank you for those comparisons, I've not looked at anything detailed like this for years - I guess it comes down to if I'm throwing GPU at something that is CPU bound (although my resource monitor doesn't show it being zapped when gaming)

Stevo: Looks like a bargain for 6gb! thanks

Having a brief look at the old CPU spec I'd assume it will be fine with a 1660. That's what I'd be buying.
The price to performance doesn't seem worth it with the cheaper cards, and you would be buying something with dated performance.

Thank you! Will get an order in and run a before / after benchmark to see where I get to. Cheers smile

Just swapped my old 970 GTX for a Radeon RX5700. Best 'bang-per-buck' around at the moment imo

I swapped my GTX970 for a Radeon RX590 and then ran some benchmarks. Then I sent it back and changed it for an RTX2060. I don't know what I was playing at with the RX590 !

The 5700 XT performance sits closer to the 2070.
Far Cry 5 fully maxxed out at 1440 hasn't troubled it one bit

Yes, looking at this:

https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.h...

it does indeed show pretty similar scores for the RTX2070 and RX5700XT.

Especially as you can use 'morepowertool' to get XT performance without having to faff about flashing the bios.
I'd be worrying about CPU bottlenecking though in the case of the OP.

I would say don't get an AMD gpu personally, I say this as someone with a Ryzen CPU.
I just bought a 5700XT and it's just awful tbh - stutters in a lot of games, lower FPS in PUBG than the 1070 it replaced etc. I sold it on ebay last week!
A mate has got an RX590 and it's always crashing on his brand new system when in games with driver issues.
Stick with a 1660Ti like people have suggested!

My RX 480 was rock solid, even overclocked, probably because the drivers were 'mature' by the time I bought it. The issue with AMD seems to be their love of allowing the public to do their beta testing. smile.
That said I'm running a 5700 and have experienced no problems whatsoever. For 320 quid it offers a similar potential to a 2070 costing nearly 200 pounds more.

As Motorrad concurs, we've had no dramas with it. It outperforms the 2060 supers and is substantially cheaper.
Your problem will be bottlenecking by your cpu etc

Another AMD shortcoming is the lack of ray tracing.
Won't be an issue here though as you need to be looking at a 2080 cards for that to be worthwhile according to rabid 'red team' fans.

Yea you're right, it's the fact the drivers need months of public testing before they mature, and the fact that you have to change the settings in Wattman if you want the card to not run at high temps and fan speeds.
I love my Ryzen but it needed a custom fan curve to be usable, I just cba to do that with my GPU as well.

Popped the 1070 back in and no stutters or loud fans.

I wanted to love the 5700XT (got it for £280) but it was too much hassle!

Thanks for the heads up on the 5700XT issues, I was debating between getting this and a 2070 Super. Looks like I’ll be going Nvidia then! Just got to find one at the right price now....
