Quick question,

When you pass your degree,
what do you get off the uni?
an email?
a letter?
a cert?

I'm lead to believe the one your given on stage is a dummy one,

so what do you get and whne do you get it?

They give you a proper certificate, I've got mine somewhere.

But, at graduation they used a decoy scroll because they had about 500 people all graduating at the same time, and four sessions of that in one day and three days of it, so to avoid any errors that had to be sorted out, you go up on stage, they hand you a scroll, take your photo and then you head off and sit down again. In fact in the photo, I'm holding a paper-coloured piece of poly pipe with some ribbon wrapped around it.

other places may do things differently of course, but this seemed to work well enough that there were no hiccups on the day aside the usual "person tripping up/down the steps to the stage" or "Person saying thank you DAD" to the dean by mistake" that you kind of think only happens on TV but clearly has some basis in reality.

Also means that my nice certificate isn't all crumpled from having been rolled up etc.

  • I remember collecting my certificate properly after the formal ceremony and photograph had been taken - there was someone positioned with the photographer who would confirm your name as you went in for the photo and then ensured you had the correct certificate when you left.
I also remember feeling very, very ill on the day!

The certificate I got was on the stage at the ceremony. Thought this was standard? Mind you, that was 25 years ago.

But it's possible my mind is playing tricks on me.

Edit: the above posts sound about right so ignore me!

Hey Dirk,

You get a certificate, at least you did in the old days LOL.

I'm also pretty sure it arrives in the post and the "on-stage" version is a dummy.

I've graduated from 3x different Universities; each time I was given the certificate on the stage or just as I was leaving the stage. At my current institution graduates walk to the centre of the stage, shake hands with the Chancellor and then collect the certificate as they leave the stage.

Mine was about 20 years ago; the certificate was posted afterwards. On stage it was a handshake and a bit of plastic pipe in a ribbon.

First time I graduated it was a dummy scroll (I'd had the certificate in the post a few weeks earlier), second time I received the certificate on stage.

My daughter couldn't be ar^ed with the ceremony and her certificate sat in filing drawer for 3 years until a prospective employer asked to see it.

I assume her university didn't automatically post them on.

I'm pretty sure she couldn't find it again now. She's one of those people who doesn't see any value in a piece of paper. It's all on computer records anyway.

I lost mine. Never been asked by any employer to see it since my first graduate role. I think I needed it for my residence visa when I emigrated but think I fobbed them off with an old photocopy
