Very low estimate (£50k-£60k plus 15% premium) - probably reflects the poor state of the interior of this dealer-owned show car, despite almost never having been driven. It appears to have just stood in a showroom for 4 years acting as a carrot to bring customers in, and being sat in by fascinated folk of all shapes and sizes.
Still, could be an amazingly good value purchase for someone who just wants to rack up the mileage. And they'll get way over 100mpg even if they drive it hard!

My guess (and it is only that - a guess) is that the low price is based on the fact that spare parts will be very hard to come by indeed and hence it will prove to be an extremely expensive car to run if you wanted to do so. Given that the car's USP is very high MPG so low cost per mile then it is thus rendered pointless as anything other than something to look at and marvel about. 'Tis an amazing piece of machinery - that's true. But only having been made in a handful of numbers means it will be a hard second-hand sell.

Poor state, a few scuff marks easily removed.Even though it is a technical masterpiece the problem is it just isn't special enough and limits potential buyers.
The grey plastic that is scuffed has a fine textured surface that is very easily scuffed off and I know for a fact that those marks are permanent. For a new pair (left and right) of interior plastic sill panels, VW quote a price of £1200 !!!Edited by VWXL1 on Tuesday 8th October 16:00

VW promised all buyers that all spare parts for the XL1 will be supported and available for at least 15 years (so until the year 2030). When VW eventually stop supplying parts, one can only assume that there may be an owners club in Germany by that time, which may take over the remaining stocks and take up the re-manufacturing of the most-needed service parts or at least help provide alternatives. It'll be very interesting to see where values go long term. The one that sold at the same auction in Nov last year went for £103k which is £8k more than it cost new. I know there are a couple of owners who use them as almost a daily driver with no problems.'Tis an amazing piece of machinery - that's true. ) then I may be half-way there; parts are hideously expensive despite them being available from your friendly local VW dealer, thus making them a very pricey proposition for anyone wanting to cover any distance. There are 2 for sale in Germany, this being the cheaper at just under €90k

There was one in the auction at AutoSport earlier this year and that didn't sell, IIRC it was a similar price too.
The estimate on that one was £70k-£80k (if memory serves me correctly). I know Bristol Heritage (a dealer) had previously been advertising that one for £80k. Like this one it had a pretty scuffed up interior.Edited by VWXL1 on Thursday 10th October 19:47

Maybe a stupid question, but which tax bracket do these sit it? Are they congestion charge exempt for example? Euro 6 compliant I assume?
The XL1 is exempt from vehicle tax. Or to put it another way, taxing it is free.As regards the congestion charge, the XL1 is currently exempt. However, the rules will tighten in October 2021, when only full EVs will qualify for exemption, so from that date XL1 will no longer be exempt. The rules will tighten even further in December 2025, at which point even EVs will be required to pay the congestion charge.
The XL1 is Euro 6 compliant. It also has the lowest CO2 emissions figure (21 g/km) of any production car (except full EV's of course). The XL1 meets the emissions standards required for the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ). (vehicles driven within the central London area). So you don't have to pay the ULEZ charge when driving an XL1 within the zone.
And in case you were wondering, the XL1 is NOT one of the VW models that were affected by / involved in the emissions scandal / dieselgate!

Question - if you had the money, would you buy this car as an investment? In other words, do people see this as a future classic?
Definitely a future classic! If I had the money I'd own two - one to keep perfect and one to drive as the daily. That said I get 95% of the benefits driving my Insight and I never have to visit the black pump, infact the engine element is undoubtedly better in the insight.
