Oh it never ceases to amaze me how a heavily armed man can be defeated by a couple of guys holding a door shut or a gate or often by an old man smacking him in the face.2 dead is awful but as you say, could have been a lot worse.

There's an argument about the media portraying white attackers as mentally ill, while non whites are 'terrorists' but he's pretty delusional from that statement. It's in two parts, I think it's just a rudimentary shotgun. Pretty shocking.
Smoke could just be old shells, or home loads etc. Shotguns are not really long range tools so maybe he was home loading or had some old slugs who knows. Either way shows he was very much an odd ball rather than a professional who had access to modern firearms.
These sorts of people tend not to use off the shelf firearms as its hard too obtain. IIRC the Charlie Hebdo people used modified MARS rifles - which is one of the reasons they have been banned in the UK.
