Awritey.

When I'm off in my caravan I was using my Sony phone with a cable to mirror to the TV and watch streaming everything.

Got a new Sony phone and the function was disabled. Set up my old phone and it updated, which promptly disabled the function. Sonybds.

Anyway is there a way of having a WiFi signal to connect devices without a data connection.

Either a Sony WiFi dongle or a chromecast. Connect either to the phone and use my 4g to stream.

Cheers in advance.

Can you use your phone as a hotspot and tether a Chromecast/Fire Stick/Roku/Now TV to it?

But you need to connect the chrome cast to the phone with no wifi.

You can create a hotspot, but I'm not sure the phone will stream whilst using it's own hotspot ?

Also I know from using a second phone to stream that this set up destroys data at a horrific rate.

No way of setting up a network signal to connect everything without it having internet access ? (don't want a separate data plan)

Can’t you just use a WiFi router?

The router would still work, still broadcast, still do what you need it to, but without a lan providing Internet. Activate your phones hotspot, connect it to the router+ fire stick= success?????!!!?!?! 😐

You think that would work ?

Always assumed the first thing the router would look for was an internet connection. If it worked and allowed connection of devices that would be ideal.

Edit, wouldn't the chromecast try to stream ? would it only play locally stored content ?

I hate Sony. Anyone know a hack to use my cable again ?

Your over complicating it.

You stream the movie/tv programme to the phone using an app such as netflix, you connect the phone to the chromecast and you press cast.

The chromecast uses the phone as a hotespot to connect to the phone. The data is coming through your phone.

or just buy a firestick and connect the firstick to the internet using your phone as a hotspot.

This is a better suggestion then mine.

Hotspot + fire stick with a mirroring app.

This goes through data like a junkie does somebody else's stash.

Hence my want of a standalone wifi signal

So your wanting to steam somehow but without a physical connection? not possible.

Your options are use data on phone, buy a dongle hotspot or.... download media to device using a wifi connection before you go.

No you mis understand.

I want to stream from my phone, and watch on my TV, I used to use a cable but that has been disabled.

If I connect using hotspot, and then stream from the same phone I'm using for the hotspot the data usage is massive.

I want to connect them using a "wifi" network and then stream from the phone.

A router wouldn't work - you would connect the Chromecast to it fine. You would connect the phone to it fine.

At this point you could cast any "locally stored" content on the phone to the chrome cast. The issue now is that to stream for example from Netflix - the phone will default to trying to use the WiFi network it's on to access the WAN/Internet. Obviously the router doesn't have a WAN connection.

I don't think there are many phones in this scenario that will remain connected to WiFi but fall back to mobile data it it couldn't reach the WAN via WiFi.

iPhones used to have WiFi assist that did something similar but not sure if it's still a thing or how effective it would be in this scenario?

So yeh you have a file saved locally on your device, connect Chromecast to phone though tethering, open the file in phones media player and press cast.

The file is then sent across the network, it doesn't however go up the internet and back down. I'm pretty sure you can turn tethering on but turn the physical data off to make sure it doesn't use any data.

I would try this right now but I'm at work.

Streaming from your phone, whether from a cable or via a hotspot, will use the same amount of data on the phone surely?

As I understand it if the Chromecast doesn't have a WiFi Network it sets itself up to receive content directly, then you can stream local content to it without the need to setup a network. I've not tried it, but I did a quick Google and it looks possible.

I know that if my CCs drop off the network they appear in my list of WiFi networks as things like Living_Room_TV.cc, I don't know if you need to connect to that WiFi network to cast directly, or whether the CC appears in the Cast List, I suspect the former.

You can in theory do it with a router too, but I don't know whether the CCs still need an internet connection, they certainly did when they first came out, if that's still the case then you need to faff about getting a WAN connection too.

The third way is to use your phone as the WiFi router, that'll give the CC the basic internet connection if it still needs it, then you can cast from any other device you've got, so use a table to play the media from if that works.

To be honest, if option 1 doesn't work your best bet is probably to get a device that can connect to the TV instead, A Raspberry Pi running Plex and a USB stick for the content would get you there for under £50.

You can connect your phone to a chromecast using the cast function. This just replaces the cable you used to use. Your phone does the download work and it is just sent to the TV by the chromecast, no different in data use to when you had a cable.

I presume has has downloaded offline content on his phone that he wants to transmit to his television without WiFi.

Haven't Google dropped Chromecast? If so, of imagine support for it to drop off.

Isn't the answer to buy a new TV with native capability to receive broadcast from Android?
