Does anyone have any experience with carbon ceramics on a Vantage V12s.
My car is 3yrs 9mths old. I purchased 2 yr extended warranty at 3 yrs. with only 16,000 miles on clock. The front discs have become pitted. They have only ever been washed with cold water and a sponge - (no soaps or chemicals or pressure washers)
The warranty company seem to be trying to establish that this is normal wear and tear

Do a bit of searching around, a while back I saw some info with photo's showing how they should look with normal wear versus how they look when goosed, I can't remember where I saw them now but there is a good chance it was on this very forum.

was it on the Bamford Rose thread - otherwise maybe contact Mike for advice

I am interested as my car has 12,000km and I am very careful with washing wheels (no chemicals etc) and don't want to have a similar issue down the track

Well, I've got 13k miles on my 10 year old DBS, and the discs are as shiny and smooth as the day I got her. Always wash the wheels with soap and water only, with rinse off with a garden hose.

Brembo states that if you drive with them while still wet, or drive through a puddle, they can pick up road dirt and that can form a grinding paste of some sort. I never drive after washing the car, so I don't worry about that particular issue.

A car you can't drive through a puddle is of no use in the UK.

Anyway. OP it might be helpful if you post up some pictures so we can see how they look. Was it you that noticed their appearance or has someone (who might want to sell you some new discs) pointed it out to you? Have you noticed any excess noise or drop off in breaking performance? At the end of the day you need someone who really knows what they're talking about to have a look at them and give you an honest opinion.

I too have a V12 Vantage S, 2014 and at 10k miles, my ceramics are fine and no evidence of wear. I have just looked through the V12VS Owners Manual and extracted this section on cleaning, this is the only mention of the brakes getting wet:

I also took a look at the Brembo website and looked for caring of the ceramic brake discs and i couldnt find any mention of not using it in the wet or avoiding puddles, but found this and it states they are relible when raining and have the same braking force, no mention of dirt and "grinding paste":

OP have you owned the car from new?

Have you driven it or has the car ever been on a track?

BlackV8 thats a great document, thanks for that and also saw the part where it advises not to drive in sandy/wet conditions as the sand can affect the discs, so thats mid winter when the gritters are are out....Mine will be locked away by then anyway.

Could a previous owner have driven the car aggressively on track? The surface of a Brembo CCM disc should be smooth, almost glass like.

If it's pitted and rough, the disc is screwed. On the Bamford Rose thread there's some case studies about people who have had issues.

I'm pretty sure someone overheated there discs on a track day (maybe at Spa?) and then needed new discs as they were cooked. If you overheat CCM discs you can burn them and they get screwed up.

If you don't bed-in the pads to the discs, they can get screwed.

If you use cleaning chemicals they can get screwed.

If you get them too wet they can get screwed.

Treat them right and they are simply superb.

It’s not wear and tear after only 16000 miles.

My 2009 v12v had this problem on one of the front disks after about 14,000 miles and the car was out of warranty but I had full AM service history. After a few discussions with my dealer and the factory they agreed to replace both front disks as they agreed that a disk should not fail after such low mileage.

If you have extended warranty I would be pushing hard to get them to cover this.

Do they feel smooth or rough despite what they look like?

You say you purchased an extended warranty, I assume you mean from an AM dealer and not a third party ?

If it’s a dealer, then I’d just be pushing back very hard on them to sort it. You would have had to rip the arse out of the brakes to do them in that mileage.

Also, have the pads ever been replace or do they need replacing ? If the answer is no to both questions, then if they’re claiming wear and tear, I’d be asking how on earth can the disc be scrap before the pads........!

As Pete has said, pics would be helpful to us.

Warranty company sounds third party, OP?

All brakes seem to be considered wear and tear by warranty companies, whatever the engineering reality. Definitely worth a hard push with the dealer or the warranty though, the stakes are high! If it is AM then they should yield...

Out of interest, would you expect them (AML or the warranty company) to cover a warped steel disc?

I have had warped discs replaced under warranty on one of my Range Rovers in the past.

Fair enough then. I suspect most would try to put this down to wear & tear in a similar way they are with the damaged (by whatever means - track use, acidic cleaner, water - really?!) CCM disc.

Hi everyone who has replied. Thanks for your comments/suggestions. In answer to some of the questions - yes I have owned the car from new, I have done track days - which is expected as one of the suspension settings is 'track'. The car has not been driven 'aggressively' on track, nor have the brakes been overheated. I haven't driven through sand/mud, other than the normal dirt on British roads. The car is marketed as a 'track' orientated car, so I would expect it to perform with 'top of the range' brakes for longer than 15,000 miles. The warranty was purchase through the AM dealership but is some form of insurance product.
It is interesting to note that the assessor that came out from the insurance company only looked at the discs and took photos. He didn't speak to me, or have the wheels removed to facilitate a better view!

The dealership, under instruction from the warranty company, have now taken the discs off, cleaned and dried then weighed them, to report back to AM Engineering. They seem to want to demonstrate that this is fair wear and tear - which isn't covered under warranty.

I will be pressing hard for this issue to be covered under the warranty, as the brakes are not fit for purpose.

Thanks for your replies which are encouraging

How many track days? It's a big issue with McLarens as well, from memory after 3/4 track days the discs need replacing. There are Aston owners who have stopped doing track days because of the issue of the discs wearing out.
