Only have to do this every couple of weeks, but what do you do in the evenings? I’m going insane from boredom and god knows how people who do it regularly cope.

I spent 3 years in London for 2-3 nights a week. There was enough work that at least one night was a 9pm finish (enabled a 4.30 departure on going home day).

I took up yoga. I saw friends and family. I went to the local leisure centre to swim. I went to the odd gig.

Though in the end the project got to me and my pal so Monday nights were no dinner and several pints in the pub.....

I've worked away on and off for about ten years now. I have a young family so now tend to use it as a chance to get some exercise. I therefore tend to work fairly late, go for a long run, then eat in a local restaurant. In the summer I go for a long bike ride (30+ miles). It means I dont have to squeeze this stuff in when at home.

It depends. I travel to a few places, mostly in Europe, but there’s one place that’s most frequent. If I’m there then there’s usually someone I can find for dinner or beers for one or two nights. Other than that it’s exercise or, if the weather isn’t to iffy, head out to see the sights. I make it a point of working out local public transport, force myself to learn a bit of language and then it’s a case of exploring from there.

And if the weather is iffy, then it’s reading or watching a film.

Business travel will drive you a little nuts if you let it and there’s a serious risk of becoming enormous. So you have to actively think about how to manage it.

Thanks for the replies. I haven’t really found an option other than drinking too much as due to the nature of my work I tend to be in the middle of nowhere. I really miss my partner and daughter when I’m away, and the job isn’t great anyway (although in PH style it pays well and I’d be daft to leave)

I travel a fair bit, sometimes to places that are interesting and have something to see or do, sometimes not so. Typically work won’t finish at 5, so I try and get things done and make the trip as useful as possible. I’m not an exercise bunny so usually it’s something to eat if possible in a restaurant that involves leaving the hotel, just a drink or two max, phone home, catch up on PH, find a watchable tv channel or listen to radio from home online, surf a bit then it’s time for sleep. Time soon passes.

Often travel to a work related destination for 2-3 days, occasionally longer for up to two weeks.

If I'm alone;
Photo walks. Need to buy a camera more suitable for night work really.
Make music (on my laptop..).
Read a book.
Write.
Exercise or swim. Walks happen more often though.
Binge watching series.
Occasional dinner. I don't like eating alone and restaurants are not generally good places to strike up casual conversation.
Read a book in a bar. Surprisingly a good way to strike up conversation. Which leads me on to the next category:

When I'm not alone:
Dinner & drinks.
Dates.
Concerts.
Movies.

I started to learn Magic. Bought a couple of books, joined an online academy and started to learn; which is 1% knowing how it works, 99% perfecting to the level of nonchalance required to make it look convincing.

Many hours can pass very quickly this way - and you have a cool thing you can do when you get home!

Great thread : thumbup:

It's bloody boring "working" away from home.
Biggest problem is staying sane when you could be elsewhere doing something you want/sensible.

This has caused a huge hatred of any hotel for me that I'm only getting over now, 3 yrs after ditching offshore working.

Avoid pubs and lap dancers.

I actually spent a lot of time just out walking around whatever own or city I was in.

I've done this a couple of times. When I was younger a Playstation was the ideal travel companion. Now? A good book and the iPad.

Haha I get the travel bit is boring but i like being away. It's tough when there's an issue at home but other that it's catch up on work, exercise or SLEEP.... The last two I do very little of.

I'm lucky, as when I work away it's nearly always with someone else. So we'd have dinner together and a drink or two.

I usually catch up on TV my partner doesn't like! I found 'A1 - Britain's longest road' on YouTube. That was a few nights!

I've been working away from home on and off for around 15 years. Getting tired of it now. Depending on where I am, it's nice to have a gentle walk in the evening - stops you falling into the trap of sitting in front of the TV or on the internet all evening. Often though I'm out in the middle of nowhere. I always take a book or two, a sketchbook and pens, my ipad. I once made some curtains. I also learnt to knit. Often though I don't really want to do much, when I'm away I'm usually working outdoors all day and it's nice just to relax.

Books, walks, iPad with games and don't disappear into the bar and the bottle. Not so bad when you finish a stupid o clock.

30 years of living out a suitcase. Valentines night was often bad. Sat at a restaurant table with a book and people whispering "awwww poor sod, she has stood him up"

In this country i used to study, go to gym or out for a run, work on some software projects and tried to work four long days to go home early.

Sounds great but I got fed up of staying in hotels and was usually in fairly good ones but after a few weeks the novelty wears off for me.

Perfect opportunity to do some exercise...

You’re bored.
It’s better for you than drinking alone.
Eating options away from home aren’t usually too healthy.

Either go for a run, or use the gym if your hotel has one.

If you aren’t really into exercise, you might not enjoy it at first, but you will eventually!

Valentines night = fast food place. In, out, no worries.

I tend to watch TV/Netflix on the laptop. Or play PC games. Lost a whole weekend in the arse end of Canada (in a hotel with no bar!), playing some game I forget now and ordering room service.

Nowadays I'd have rented a car and gone somewhere/done something.
