iPhone / Whatsapp am I imagining this?

[So]

When I enter phone > contacts I am sure I used to just press ‘call’ and make a call. Now I get whatsapp as a call option at the top of a list of options.

Is this new?

I had a glass of sherry last night so I am quite prepared to believe that it’s me. But a couple of times I’ve found myself whatsapp calling someone I intended to mobile call.

Yes, you can make calls to someone over WhatsApp, it just now lets you do it via the iPhone interface. But its essentially a voice over data call, not over GSM networks.
