Trying to finalise my spec (2S cab) and having thoughts on audio.

Not able to compare as OPC doesn’t have the two specs.

Only reference I have is I had PSP on a 987 years ago and was happy. I have standard audio in an A4 cab and that’s fine too.

I’ve read ‘must have Bose’ and also ‘don’t bother’ comments, but does anyone know how the standard PSP compares to either of those?

Listening wise, its rock, metal and talking. I don’t listen to genres that are very bass orientated.

Not bothered about the ‘must have for resale’.

I have the standard audio (so not Bose and not Burmester). Is that what you mean by PSP?

It’s reasonable but doesn’t have the depth of Bose as it’s missing a sub. It also gets a bit harsh with the volume up a bit.

Bose also includes noise cancelling which I guess might reduce road noise on motorways.

I have the standard sound pack in my 718 BGTS - I rarely listen to music in this - and Bose in my Macan. The standard system is quite weak in terms of bass response and can get quite “tinny” at higher volumes. The Bose system is way better and compares favourably to a Harman Kardon system I had in my BMW . My recommendation would be to go for the Bose in a cabriolet.

Yes. I mean the standard. The Porsche Sound Package Plus

I can't find any documentation on this?

I think the Bose is good - I couldn't justify the Burmeister cost. Ordered blind however, and haven't compared to either of the alternatives, so can't really help!

That reads more like the system just listens for increased background noise and turns the volume up, rather than true noise cancelling.

"adjusts the music so you can hear it better" and "no need to adjust the controls or turn up the volume."

It's a bit vague. It definitely says it adjusts the volume and implies that it might adjust tone.

Exactly. You'd think Bose would specifically mention 'noise-cancelling' and make a thing of it if that's what it was actually doing.

I imagine noise cancelling in a car cockpit is extremely difficult if not impossible with all the sound reflections and resonance present.

The tech is pretty common. I think there is an option deep in the settings to either switch it in or out and adjust sensitivity.

It is noticeable, but I find myself still manually adjusting the volume at different speeds. I probably need to delve back into the menus and experiment.

Good point. It does cancel some noise but it’s certainly not like the Bose headphones. I had it in my last car but it was a standard feature and decided it wasn’t worth £1000 extra on my 992.

Before ordering I first test drove a 992 with Bose, then listened to the standard system in a dealership, then rented a 992 with the standard system for a day. I was surprised how bad the standard system was but that only became clear after a while. The biggest issue is the speakers rattle badly on anything with more bass even at 1/3 of max volume. If you’re just listening to voice and classical music it might not matter but otherwise definitely go for Bose. Really tried to keep costs down but knew I wouldn’t be happy with the standard system. I went for a coupe but on a cab you might need to turn up the volume even more.

Spoke to OPC today and they now have cars with both, so been in to have a play using music that I listen to both in the car and at home. Here's what I found:

Tried the Standard/Sound Package Plus first. Sounded fine at normal volume and cranked up fairly loud (about 3/4 max).

Then tried the Bose. First impression was it potentially sounded clearer. It definitely has more bass, but on 0 treble 0 bass settings, it has too much bass - better when you take some off.

Tried Surround mode on and off. On sounds 'fuller', but even on a short listen, somewhat fake. It makes it sound more stereo, but sort of wrong at the same time, if that makes sense? A bit like surround on a TV when you're not using a 5.1 (7.1 / whatever) source.

Went back to the standard car and listened again to same music. Stuck +2 on the treble and bass which gave it a bit more clarity/brightness and again sounded ok.

At comfortable loud I didn't have any issues with the standard sound. Might be different at very loud and with bass oriented music.

This was all sat in the quiet with the engine off. Turn the engine on and sticks some revs in and the introduction of background noise makes the difference harder to tell. Add tyre and wind noise, and it'll be harder again.

It's actually quite hard to compare, even with both cars there. Comparing home audio when you can switch speakers is one thing, but even the short time to get out of one car and in to the other and find the track etc. makes it difficult. Within seconds the one you're listening to quickly becomes the norm.

It may depend on the type of music, but even at 3/4 max volume in the quiet with the engine off, we didn't notice any rattle. Could it have been a bad or damaged speaker?

I had Bose on my 991.1GTS and it was nothing special ,certainly not something that made you want to listen to loud music with and not worth £1k cost. Just sold Vantage which had 600w Meridian system which again was not great and anything with bass was painful for the speakers. I don’t think cars are the place for listening to high quality music but I must admit I did spend a few fruitless years of my youth cutting holes in rear parcel shelves to insert large speakers and adding amps in search of something better.

Have new Macan and 992 on order and just going for standard audio on both which should be fine as will mainly be used to listen to talk radio/podcasts .

Did see on a rennlist thread that a popular upgrade on 991 Bose or SPP was to replace tweeters with dynaudio units

Only had Bose in one of my cars and never specked it again-not worth the cost, standard item is fine for a car IMV

Bose is average and just adds more (too much) bass. Not worth it imo. Would love to try the Burmester though...

They had one of these, but I didn’t bother trying it. For me it was too big a price tag for high end audio in an environment that is far from optimal for listening to music.
