This came from my grandads attic, it has great magnification.
He was a mortar sergeant in WW2, any ideas what it's come from?

Thanks.

Scope when using mortars? It's cool high five for having it.

It does look like the one in Captain Holts link, though in better condition. It's a shame the rubber eye ring was brittle and disintegrated when touched.
What would it have been attached to, there are 4 bolt holes on the bottom.

It's a monocular, which really does mean half a pair of binoculars.

If it doesn't have a reticule (crosshairs) it was probably used for spotting
the fall of the bombs.

It might have been attached to a field tripod or a strut/bracket rising from the mortar baseplate.

It looks to have survived well so perhaps it never saw service.

FYI, try putting, 'WW2 Mortar Scope' into Google and take a look at the images. Interesting stuff on there.

Range finders usually have two lenses (to provide parallax).

I guess they put the dummy there for scale, could have given him some shoes and socks though. smile
