Most Reliable Modern BMW: Petrol vs Diesel?

Hi,
I was just wondering what the most reliable modern (2010-onwards) BMW is? What the highest mileage modern BMW you've owned/seen?

I'm guessing it'd be some kind of straight 6, but the question is what's better for daily driving (running costs - i.e. fuel, servicing, repairs)?

But when I asked for some advice from my BMW Indy he did tell me to avoid anything with less than 6 cylinders and preferably petrol, so that is what I've been doing. He has an E39 530i which made me think he might be right!
