I think I may be an unwitting accomplice in a possible attempted fraud.
Yesterday I received a letter from a well-known high-street bank. The letter briefly said "Thanks for your recent correspondence regarding re-confirmation of your identity. Your documents are enclosed as promised". Inside the envelope was an old utility bill of mine, relating to my old address, from 2003.
All pretty straight-forward you might think.
However, I have never, ever held an account with this bank and most certainly did not send them the utility bill. Luckily, I still have mail redirection setup from the old address and whoever had sent the letter from the bank had folded the utility bill so that my old address was shown in the window on the envelope.
I have managed to contact the bank this morning and all the details have been passed on to their fraud department so not much more I can do at the moment.
Any thoughts?

unfortunately it's a part of the society we live in today. A few years ago I invested in a paper shredder. Nothing leaves the house now unless it's in several hundred pieces. Sounds a pain but it's a small price to pay for piece of mind. The only time you're vulnerable (and it looks as if this is when you were caught) is when you move. Hopefully you've nipped it in the bud and will not become another statistic.

Or do anything to catch the persons carrying out the fraud. they will just write it off and we all pay for it.
Ditto. Twice.
The banks really don't seem much interested in catching the perpetrators. The first time I was done they even told me not to bother telling the police.
But then pretty much all UK banks are an utter disgrace.
I must admit this sort of thing is becoming more common from what I've heard - or is it just media hype..?
Either way, I had one of my cards cloned last year... all sorted by HSBC (top marks) but still a pain, and rather disconcerting (it was done at a railway station). Hmm... do I need a shredder, or is this an over-reaction? Perhaps it's better to be safe than sorry...

Sorry to hear about your experience. Unfortunately I'm the sort of that would want a 'face to face' with the person in question and that would more than likely get me in more trouble.
I getting less tolerant of people as I get older and am more prepared to take matters into my own hands due to the lack of interest from third parties i.e banks/police. Especially as you know them!!
At the end of the day you have to remind yourself how hard you work to get where you are. Personally I won't stand for anyone taking that away.
I want to say that a quick reminder that you're a black belt in claw hammer might have the desired effect but I'd probably get slated by the PC people here.....
