Got clocked doing 48 in a 40. Received notification but no punishment yet, just about to post off the form. First time offender but current assumption is 3 points and a fine, is that right?

Once I know do I need to tell my insurance company straight away?

Also if I'm a named driver on another do they need to know?

If you tell one insurance company you make the info available to them all because they share access to this type of data. Tell them and they change stuff at renewal.

Oh and tell them when you get your points, not before.

You don't have to tell them until next renewal.

Unless the next renewal is due immediately, in which case you are both correct.

This......

My sister's partner got 3 points, he didn't tell his insurers until he crashed his car. They wrote it off but withheld £600 from the payout for not informing them as the points 'could' have made a difference to the premium!

I wonder if that means if he hit someone else, he would have had to fork out 600 from his own pocket.

Do the speed awareness course? Unless of course you've already done it previously.

Ouch. I heard about someone who crashed their car and didn't disclose the 3 points he received prior. All they did was charge him £15 for admin fees to update his record, and then paid out.

Wrong. All insurance companies are duty bound to act within the ABI regulations, and they make it quite clear you don't have to tell then until next renewal, unless it involves a ban (when presumably someone else will become the main driver.)

He obviously crashed his car after the next renewal, and he didn't tell them when he should have. He didn't renew in January, get the points in April, crash in August, and have £600 withheld. That didn't happen.

He didn't, he crashed the car during the current policy period he got the points.

I don't believe it, although that might have been the story he gave you to hide his embarrassment. If it is true, then a simple call or email to the insurers pointing out that under ABI regs, he was under no obligation to have advised them of the points, should see the immediate return of his £600.

Insurance isn't the wild west. They cannot make up their own rules and do as they please. Whilst they have a level of independence in the decisions they make, stuff like rules around disclosure of convictions are tightly regulated by the governing body and all insurers must comply.
