The Iphone 4, a Future collectible?
Discussion
I am seeing these things now practically being given away and I have always thought they were a lovely bit of kit and already have a certain retro charm. is it time to start buying them up and putting them in the attic?
Most of them would benefit from a new battery (can be had for a fiver and installed yourself) and of course most apps no longer work but they are still a smart phone/camera/music player/etc etc.

I just watched an auction tick down to zero and couldn't resist jumping in so I just bought a 16GB one with its original packaging and in what seems like good condition for £15 inc delivery.
If nothing else it can be permanently docked in my old Bose SoundDock for perfectly acceptable MP3 and internet radio playback!
Anyone else think that these phones were pivotal and will go up in value one day?

My daughter gave me an Iphone4 when she upgraded. I shall now keep it safely in the back of a drawer. Just in case. Most of them would benefit from a new battery (can be had for a fiver and installed yourself) and of course most apps no longer work but they are still a smart phone/camera/music player/etc etc.

No. Simple because of apples ability to make hardware almost entirely redundant.
I have an oldish iPad mini which works perfectly however becuae it won’t install iOS past a certain version a lot of apps simple will not run on it.
Of course that is true. I have an oldish iPad mini which works perfectly however becuae it won’t install iOS past a certain version a lot of apps simple will not run on it.
I just dug out an old Iphone 4 recently and was only able to install you tube and a couple of other apps that i wanted by going round the houses and installing older versions of apps. I imagine in the future that just will not be an option so i wont be resetting that phone again!
I plan on keeping a couple even if i have no intention of using them as phones. With a bit of luck they will continue to be usable as 'retro' music players for many years to come. I was surprised when I saw they even have blue tooth..
Maybe in a few years i will be able to sell them as Nano Iphone 20's to unsuspecting young people

With approx. 10 millions handsets sold globally, there is unlikely to be a situation where demand of iPhone 4s outstrips supply.
I have been waiting almost 40 years for my ZX81 and ZX Spectrum to start rising in value. Has not happened yet....
I think the zx81 is doing better price wise than the Iphone 4 at the moment, maybe your day is comingI have been waiting almost 40 years for my ZX81 and ZX Spectrum to start rising in value. Has not happened yet....

I can see the appeal of the groundbreaking first gen iphone, but not a 4, which is just another old mobile phone of which there are millions.
My 2011 Galaxy S2 still works ok using an aftermarket ROM in daily use as a music player and alarm clock connected via bluetooth to a speaker. Nothing about an iphone 4 to get excited about.

I’ve just hung up my iPhone 5 today, loved that phone.
Gone to Samsung now A40, apple just annoyed me
Nothing wrong with the five, I would still be using mine if someone hadn't offered me a good deal on a six a few months ago. I am only a light mobile user so I dont 'need' anything special..Gone to Samsung now A40, apple just annoyed me
This vid might be worth a watch to you, if only out of curiousity. Particularly the comments about finding old models still boxed, and unscrupulous types who are replacing batteries and vacuum sealing boxes again to give the impression repaired units are "new, in box."

according to wikipedia 1.7 million were sold in the first 3 days, i image quite a few million more in the following years.
No one throws phones away, so most of them are all sat in draws or stock piled at recyclers waiting for battery recycling market reach a point it's worth opening them up.
I'm sure there are more than enough boxes kicking around to satisfy demand for those will nostalgia for a very long time to come.
