Am I tight? bloody sponsorship forms
Discussion
This has made me angry and just wanted other's opinions.
Woman in my office has just come round everybody asking for sponsorship for her daughter (who nobody knows) because she is doing a walk for her local hospital.
Now, I am not the richest guy in the world so I don't have money to just throw around. However, there are some very good causes out there which I, sometimes, do donate to. However, I choose what and when.
BUT...what I do object to is someone trying to make me feel guilty for not sponsoring her daughter who I've never ever met and never ever will!!
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's a very worthwhile cause and will benefit many - but, as is every other cause that asks for your money!
Is it just me?!!

We had a similar thing in our office. Somone came round asking people to buy raffle tickets to win a giant teddy bear
and then proceeded to try and make an example of me for not wishing to donate. It went a bit like this...
Them: Buy a raffle ticket.
Podie: No thanks, I'll pass.
Them: Oh, don't want to help a worthwhile cause? (raises voice) Why not? Too tight?
Podie: I choose who I wish to donate too.
Them: (loudly) Well it's only a quid a ticket
Podie: (very loudly) well I donate on a monthly basis to Cancer Research, so how much have you donated to charity this year?
Them: oh well, er um...
Podie: (loudly) Well? C'mon, I thik the rest of the office would like to know, given that I'm the "tight" one...
Them: (storms off)
Stick to your guns. Donate to who you wish, when you wish. We all have our "pet" charities... the whole point of a donation is that it is something you want to do..

haha, nah - she's a sister in the hospital that they're doing the walk for.
I'm glad you all said that - as she walked away I almost felt bad and - as Podie said - they all start to say 'but it's only a quid' etc.
HOWEVER...guns were indeed stuck to, and as she started to explain how this is such a worthwhile cause and how far they're going to walk (which, coincidentally, is the same route I use on a pub crawl, but that's another story), I simply looked at her (across the office) and said "No". As you can tell, I was somewhat annoyed at that point hehe.
I know there have been threads on here before about the pot jinglers (forget the proper funny name) - the people that surround you as you get off a tube or walk down a high street. Similar sort of thing!
Grrr grumble grumble miser grrrrrrr grumble

So how far is she going to walk?
That gets me almost as much as the "sponsor my free parachute jump/holiday" crowd. Walking 5 miles?? Whippee f

She only told me the route, not the distance, but I think it's about 8 - 10 miles. Not exactly a slog!

If someone's going to actually put themselves out - do someting physical, mentally, or practically, very very difficult indeed, then you feel more inclined to donate - to whatever charity it is they're collecting for. A walk with loads of other people and maybe even some media - not exactly ground breakingly difficult, is it!?
Though, I am now trying to think of things I WOULD sponsor (i.e. what I mean by mega difficult) and I can't think of stuff off the top of my head.
I donate to two charities monthly. I was really pissed off last week. Somone knocked on my door asking me to set up a regular contribution to a charity. I explained that I give to two already. He said, "Would you like to add a third?" I felt like saying, "F*ck off! Do I look like a bank manager?" I politely said, "No!" and closed the door.
People think that you should be obliged to give to charity. Plain and simple fact is that there are so many causes, but it is impossible to give to all. I, therefore, never feel guilty about saying no.

Couple of summers ago.
Me: No particular agenda, wandering through Winchester, waiting for a mate to turn up on the train so we could start drinking.
Girl: V.attractive, smiling, clipboard and 'charity flourescent vest' thing. "Hello Can I talk to you for a minute"
Me: Seeing attractive girl and having no particular place to be: "Yes, but I already give a substantial amount to charity and so I definitely won't give you any money."
Girl: "Ok"
She proceeded to talk to me (and respond to my dirty-flirty behaviour, fnarr) for about ten minutes, at the end of which she said:
"So, would you like to donate?"
Me: "No."
She then proceeded to get upset with a particularly fine blend of shirty / huffy.
I ask you!?

Totally agree with you, I will only give money to someone for something like this if they are doing something worthwhile, otherwise I make donations as and when I choose.
I'm happy to sponsor people to clean up a local woodland for instance, or pack my bags at Sainsbury's (on certain conditions) all of which I have done in the past but parachute jumps, cycles, walks etc are all a no go. I'd rather they didn't do it and the charity got twice as much by not having to fork out half the cost of these things.

having said that, i don't like being 'pressurised' into giving money away - so i just refuse point-blank if anyone tries it on.
