Spanish illegal independence referendum in 2017
Discussion
Those jail terms seem staggeringly over the top.
I strikes me that this will simply cause more anger and violence, and it will not end well for anyone.
I used to work with a really nice guy from Barcelona, and if you suggested he was Spanish he would go bananas. He was Catalan through and through apparently.
This won’t go away, but who knows what the answer is.

The SNP are lightweights compared to this lot...still don’t stand a chance of an independent Scotland though.
Can you see this happening in Edinburgh or Glasgow..???
If they'd sent the Met to crack heads then yes, easily. Fortunately, useless as they are, our political class seem a bit more sensible. Can you see this happening in Edinburgh or Glasgow..???

The SNP are going about things the right way. They know that whipping their supporters up into riots will achieve nothing.
They will simply keep plugging away politically until Scotland votes for independence in the next IndyRef (whenever that is) or they decide that independence won’t happen because not enough Scottish people want it.
It is staggering that in 2019 an EU country effectively has political prisoners. That said, Spainiards were cheerfully slaughtering each other within a generation, so I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised.
It also seems to be a staggeringly inept decision by the government - the protests have gone from “nothing” to “full on” in less than a day.

There's nothing quite like a martyr to whip up a cause.rxe said:

As a matter of interest what have the Spanish government got to do with a judgement handed down by the Supreme Court? It also seems to be a staggeringly inept decision by the government - the protests have gone from “nothing” to “full on” in less than a day.
Which can be found here for anyone interested. It explains The Who did what to who, and how the sentences were arrived at. It’s 500 pages long and a tough read, even for a Spaniard.

FWIW, I don’t live in Catalonia, but many people here in Andalucia think that the sentences were on the light side.

I'm quite sure they go above and beyond to help out the Madrid government quash someone/somewhere with a different opinion.Good job the first to "leave" the EU was a large, pretty much stand alone independent country.
Many smaller countries would have been annihilated in the extreme as the EU bulldozed it's agenda.

Care to summarise the justification for those who dont speak Spanish? Which can be found here for anyone interested. It explains The Who did what to who, and how the sentences were arrived at. It’s 500 pages long and a tough read, even for a Spaniard.

And for balance, my Valencian girlfriend thinks the sentences are shocking long.

It's a pretty far out act for a modern European country. In no way will this quell anything.
One does get the distinct feeling that if this were some third world province locking up legally elected politicians for daring to ask the populous if they wanted rid of their colonial overlords it would result in international outrage.
