Advice for an old codger

I'm hoping to buy a ~10Kcar shortly. The problem is that the examples I want are 500 miles away and my days of driving that distance to look at a car are gone. I accept the perils of buying sight unseen, they are all 'reputable' dealers. My question is about delivery, which they all offer. At what points do they give me the keys/docs and I give them the money. I can't see me handing over a wodge of cash to a transporter driver, so how does it work and how best to protect myself? If the answer is internet banking I'm screwed.

I suspect you'll have to pay upfront, so if no internet banking then just pop in the local branch?

Or split it with as much on a credit card as possible as they offer some protection?

That or is one near an airport? Assuming you are way up north and the cars down south or vice versa? You might be able to view and drive home or view and at least see it in the flesh before it gets delivered?

Or if a bit niche may be a local piston head would look over it cosmetically for you.

With the best will in the world, they'll all want the money before they incur the cost of delivery.

For that sort of distance might a one-way flight work if you could buy using a card?

Then if it doesn't work out it's potentially a night in a Premier Inn then a one-way flight home.

You need to make the effort if it's what you really want!
