1st time : Buy a car in the UK !

Good morning everyone !

I plan to buy my first car in the UK, and I have a question :

There is, like in France a 'bonus/malus' scheme for purchasing private car, depending on the level of C02 emissions ? (Here, owner have to pay till 10.000€ and soon 12.500€ for CO2 rejections exceeded 191 g/km.)

Also, what's the calcul method for your 'UK registration certificate' ?

You are in for a pleasant surprise.

There is no tax that has to be paid when you purchase a second hand car in the UK.

Both seller and buyer fill in the V5 - registration document, I believe this an now be done online. There is no charge.

The "road fund licence" which is paid monthly, twice yearly or yearly has to be started anew by the new owner.. This means that the old and new owner both pay for the month in which the transfer happens. This seems to be almost the end of the world for many people on this site although most cars RFL is between about 20 and 200 pounds per year!

Watch out if you are buying a car under 5 years old, and it was initially over £40,000 the annual RFL is then more expensive.

Only the annual Road Fund Licence, as described before.

I hadn't realised quite how expensive new cars with high CO2 emissions had become.

I have recently moved to France and I am trying to decide what next car/extra car to buy, the tax on the change of ownership, based on CO2 or power, and the age related discounts seems to be a major factor to think about.

I thought this was normal until my girlfriend sold her car in Australia and the new owner had to pay $8.40 per $200 of the cars sale price in tax. On an $11k car the new owner had to pay $462 tax and $750 registration. This for a six year old car that cost $17k new.

You can see why the majority of people just buy a new car there when the second hand market is so expensive.

Thanks again for this update. Indeed, in France only the first owner have to pay this huge taxe and ... that's it !
