C7 RS6 vs f10 M5 used prices
Discussion
OK, so for the last few weeks I have been thinking about buying a big, powerful, luxurious sporty saloon or estate to replace my little pocket rocket hot hatch.
I have been hammering about in a bright yellow RS Megane 275 Cup-S for the last couple of years. It is brilliant but bone jaringly harsh. I increasinly want the option to waft – quickly!
The two cars that leap out are the C7 RS6 and the F10 M5.
But here is the thing. Most reviews say that the M5 is the better car – and certainly no one says it is any worse than the RS6 - so I assumed that the used prices would hold up at least as well as the RS6.
But hell no, there is a huge gulf in used prices. I can pick up a similar age, similar miles F10 M5 for £10k to £15K less than the equivalent RS6. (£23-£25k for the M5, £35k and up for the RS6 - both 2014 with c 45k miles). That makes the M5 a massive bargain.
I assume this must be down to the relative rarity of the RS6 given how well regarded the M5 is.
I’d go for the M5 in a minute if I did not live in rural Scotland where the 550 bhp and rear wheel drive do not go very well with roads that are generally covered with at least one of the following on any given day: mud, rain, cow s
t, dead leaves, snow, ice, wild haggis.
So the M5 looks like a huge bargain but my gut tells me it would be a waste due to the inevitable lack of traction.
So can someone convince me that the M5 with the right tyres will be fine – or am I going to have to find the extra 15k for an RS6?
For clarity I'm not looking to hoon everywhere in all conditions but tip-toeing about with the traction control light on all the time defeats the purpose of owning the car. (I had a 5.0 XKR a few years ago and it was dire in the wet - the bloody kick down was lethal in Auto)

I had an M5. Loved it. 100s of miles at a time at motorway speeds without breaking a sweat, and one of the best cabins and audio setups. But I could spin up the tyres in third gear on a dry road without trying, so if you are marginal on your local road surfaces requiring 4wd then I don't think it is the sensible choice. Though if you're bothered about the sensible choice get a Duster, and park it next to your shiny M5.
I'd recommend a set of winter tyres for the M5. I did on my C63 and they improved traction considerably when cold and wet. 500bhp and rwd, in the winter, on summer tyres could easily end badly, especially up in Scotland. The people who say winter tyres don't make a difference haven't tried them.
I toyed with the M5 but reliability ultimately but me off. I'd only consider a BMW AUC, with Competition pack if possible.

Over recent years I've seriously harked after a C63, E60 M5 & a few similar cars, but much as I want something of that ilk, I know that it just doesn't make much sense at all where I live....
Twisty A routes with no reasonable line of sight & crappy B's just waste a super potent RWD car for most of the year up here - depending where you are you could find the inability to use the M5 for 11 out of 12 months pretty frustrating!

I am going through the same consideration for buying a car next year, only it's F10 M5 vs C6 RS6. The lack of usability does put me off the BMW massively, given that we have almost 200 rainy days a year here in Scotland. I had an F10 530D last year which would spin up fairly easily, I can't imagine how that would improve with another 300bhp on tap! I considered an E63 (5.5 twin turbo V8), as they're good for over 800ftlb with light tuning, but that seems completely pointless in our weather, probably even dangerous.
Have you considered the C6? It would cost about half what a C7 does, if price is an issue.
Chris Harris said on his review of the C6 (I think), "On a rainy day, the M5 won't even see which way it went". I think that sums up the matter to be honest. The RS6 makes much more sense up here.

Good shout on the C6. Will take a look.
I might also take an M5 out for a test drive to see if I like it.
In some ways it would be quite good if I did not get on with it as that massivly simplfies the whole thing - but I'll probably love it and make everything more complicated.
Sorry to bump an old thread, did you end up getting either of these cars? what are your thoughts?I might also take an M5 out for a test drive to see if I like it.
