Wondering if anyone on here has experience of this? Brother has been out in Oz for nearly 20years and turns the big 4-Oh in December. When we met up in Florida last year he bemoaned the lack of choice/expense of buying Whisky there. I know the likes of 'Master of Malt' and The Whisky Shop send to Australia but I've read alcohol can also incur significant duty costs for the recipient before the item is released even though it's a gift. Is this true?
Last thing I'd want to do is send him a gift which then costs him a fortune to receive!
Thanks in advance

It's not the duty you need to worry about, it's the fact you can't send liquids of any description.

Nothing decent at Dan's? - https://www.danmurphys.com.au/whisky

Probably too mainstream for a die hard whisky drinker. Not sure if they can order in.

Take a look at these guys - usually pretty decent selection and cheaper than the usual stores

Anything fun is expensive here, so import duties are massive to stop you importing any. Which side of Aus? Maybe a local can help.

I won't get import duty as the value will be too low. You can send it no problem.

At least ten years ago I sent a couple of bottles of wine to a sister then in Aus.
IIRC there was some duty to pay but I did this up front although I can't recall how, nor can I recall the means.

/as you were, maybe not that helpful.

I haven't sent booze but when we send gifts back it is pretty expensive even without any duty.

I have occasionally used these guys for sending gifts locally. Compared to UK prices they are pretty expensive but will be a whole lot less hassle.

As the previous poster said, just use an Australian store to send something - it's a lot less hassle and by the time you factor in shipping, duties etc it's not going to much more expensive.

I've used Masters of Malt to send whisky (English Whisky Company near Snetterton circuit, recommended) to Aus and yes there was a large customs charge due (MoM ship ex-VAT but Aus then tack on about 40% depends on strength)

However, Royal Mail rules have changed in the last year or so and you can send bottles under 1 litre and <24% which in my experience have never attracted Aus customs charges.

One more thing MoM passed the Aus customs charge details to me direct so you can pay for your brother to receive his gift unhindered.

One further local Aus retailer but I didn't use them in the end.

Thanks all for the responses. Ended asking my sis in law as she'd contacted me this morning regarding something else. She apparently has a friend who works in the industry and will get me a pricelist. No idea what will be available or the prices but will hopefully be a lot less hassle than sending/worrying an item from the UK. All else fails I will look at some of the links posted above.
