Good morning,

Got a little idea buzzing around my head at the moment that I wanted to share with you and see what you guys thought!

I currently own a C63 AMG Coupe - 4.0 biturbo. A fantastic car, really happy with it. I do around 15-18k a year mileage.

I have been tempted to make a change though - and have spent most of my time looking at R8 V10 Plus'. 2016/2017 ones - my plan was just to swap into this, have one car and just enjoy attempting to use it every day.

However, given the fact that a good R8 V10 Plus is £90k+, I cant ignore other options for similar money - namely, Mclaren 570S, F430's - things that seem a little more special but not quite as well suited to the daily grind. The 570S could do it, but it seems like a Mclaren will depreciate like a stone if I slammed 18k miles on it in a year - if I bought one with circa 10k on it, trying to shift it on in 12 months or so with 28k would seem like a tough challenge, or I'd take a big hit.

So, I've considered jumping into the 570S and leasing something for the daily grind, throw the dog in etc. Seems sensible, I could split my mileage between the two. But for 90% of my week, I'd be driving a worse car than I do now, plus two lots of car insurance and undoubtedly more expensive overall. I do enjoy just cruising around in the C63, but knowing I can boot in when I see some clear road - whereas if I'm in a 1.4TFSI A4, it won't happen.

Would you a) stick with the C63 b) go for the R8 V10 Plus c) jump into a 570S / F430 and get a daily alongside (where I'd do most of my driving)

What you going to be doing with the dog if you get a 570 or R8....?

Dog slobber, hair, claw scratches and doogy smell in a supercar will make it depreciate as quick as putting 18k per year on it laugh

I couldn't put up with the frustration of owning/using a 'supercar' as a daily, considering I got frustrated enough driving a BMW 135i as a daily on UK roads eek

I've gone back to comfy waft-a-bility as my priority in a DD now, with something very old, analogue and fun in the garage for the weekend.

I'd keep the daily as the best car, I've done it the other way round (on a far smaller budget) and it's annoying knowing that your other car is far better and sitting in the garage while you trundle about in something crap.

Putting 18k a year on anything is going to hurt the value of it, more so when you're looking at high value cars in the first place. You might as well get something you like as you'll be in it quite a bit.

Thanks guys - mixed responses!

Dog - I can throw him in my Mrs' car if we need to take him anywhere and I only have a two-seater!

Just a tricky one, if I slam 18k on a 570S it would depreciate like a stone, and I'd be mindful of that. Like-wise with an R8 but not to the same extent.

You could get a daily that is enjoyable to drive - I have a 2012 RS Clio, which I enjoy on country roads more than the expensive cars thanks to the manual transmission, enough power but not so much you have to constantly hold back, great chassis etc.

An FF (if it is in budget by now in the UK) could give you a little bit of both, but it is not comparable to a car like a 570 in terms of dynamics (just too heavy even if it hides its weight surprisingly well) - can also extend the warranty up to 15 years, so you are covered in case of big bills. It will likely continue to depreciate quite substantially though . The V12 will be an event at any speed. By far the best daily car I have ever owned.

Both R8 and 570 will depreciate quite a lot even with low annual mileage imo - I forgot where, but somebody posted recently that the GFV on a 540 or 570 with a purchase price of c90k was in the low/mid 40s after 3 or 4 years (probably can find it somewhere in the supercar section)

I wouldn’t aim for one car to do everything. Esp a Mclaren, for the depreciation reason you mention.

If you have 90k In you “pot” what about an earlier non Plus R8 V10 and a workhorse like a Golf R or GTi? Or an AM and a similar workhorse.

Or if you really want a Macca and can keep the miles down, get a 540 (the times you’d be able to use the ten tenths a 570 offers over a 540 would be limited, I’d say) plus a workhorse.

In short unless you want to put a lot of miles on a special car and suffer the depreciation, two cars is the solution.

I wouldn't want a 430 for a daily car - I have a 360 and although it's a fabulous car, you really have to be in the mood and for a daily commute I often won't be.

McLaren would make a fabulous daily car - if you haven't driven one yet, you'll probably be surprised at just how well suited they are to "normal" driving. It will cost you a lot in depreciation - but that's (almost) equally true if you use it as a weekend car or put 15k miles a year on it.

If you can afford it, my advice is : buy it, use it, enjoy it. You're a long time dead and all that......

Get 2+ cars, i have a V8 Vantage for the weekend and an old Alfa 166 daily, a SLK for the sun and until recently an old LR which will be replaced by a jeep.

I love the alfa and the Vantage for very different reasons, i wouldn't drive the Vantage daily due to parking (inconsiderate idiots), losing the specialness, running costs, etc and ultimately where do you go next if you daily, in your case, a 570s?

I am sure the C63 is a great car, but it isn't a "special" one.

Why not keep the Merc as it sounds like you really enjoy it and it works as a DD. And sink the extra £40/50k into a really nice modern classic. Like a Porsche 911 Turbo or GT3 from 15 - 20 years ago.

That way whatever you take you'll always be in something fun.

I'd say keep the C63 as your daily car as I'd say you will struggle to find much significantly better for daily use.

Buy a Caterham for weekends, buy a decent one and you will lose next to nothing on it in depreciation, and it will cost you a lot less outlay too

Decent gen 1 manual V10 R8 and a Stage 3 Fiesta ST. Would set you back £70k(ish).

Personally, I'd not worry about the depreciation because of the dog - stick a seat cover on whatever you buy and give it a hoover before you sell it.

Slightly different price-point, but I'm thinking of an F-Type or Vantage next. I'm sure my Golden Retriever will be be more than happy to make the front seat his home.

Were it me, I think I'd get something comfy with a bit of poke for the daily commute - maybe an old Supercharged Range Rover, an older C/E63, maybe an older S5, and use the rest to get something you wouldn't use as a daily, like an F430/996 GT3/997 Turbo, for the weekend.

Comfy, plenty of poke, all the mod cons for the week, then something that's more of an event when the mood takes you on high days and holidays.

Thanks for the replies - the C63 is great, and if I need to keep it then it won't upset me.

I just feel like I want something more special really - I've actually had a Gen 1 V10 R8 and that's what's taken me towards the new shape V10 Plus, but I always had the intention of daily-ing it. Keep it 12 months, decide what I want from there. But with a 570S - I feel like I'll be digging a hole of depreciation by putting a shed load of miles onto it. I don't think the R8 would get hit quite has hard as it seems a bit less sensitive to mileage.

I was tempted to lease the daily as I'll get some benefits by doing it linked to my business - something simple for £200pm or whatever. At the £90k price-point, I just cannot ignore the 570S when we're looking at R8's. An FF has also crossed my mind, but in honesty, I think I'd be worrying about it breaking - they might be in an acceptable price-point, but maintaining an old V12 Ferrari and attempting to daily it doesn't seem wise.

This 100%...my lab goes in all my cars and none of them smell/ have smelt of dog or are otherwise covered in slobber or scratches...all you need is a blanket! Admittedly I do have a hatchback that gets used if it's a REALLY muddy walk

Can we have a dogs in supercars thread?! Here's mine smile

I have a friend that uses his McLaren as a daily, this has included commutes to Scotland from the south coast when he's had to work away. He only gets quite a few track days in and it's serviced well by McLaren as part of his deal. It gets properly used the way any car should be, made possible by them being almost daily supercars like 911's and NSX's of old I guess.

If I had your dilemma (which, let's be honest is a wonderful dilemma to have and I'm insanely jealous), I'd get an older but still interesting daily. Hot Hatch or older AMG and then a McLaren or Lambo/Fezza of some sort. Or as mentioned above by someone, just get an Aston and use it as a daily.

Let us know what you decide, with pics. smile

Thanks for all the responses guys.

I am swaying towards the 570s and genuinely spliting my mileage between that and something else - a cheap lease car, A4, GTI etc. Not necessarily having the 650S as a garage queen, but not using it for the insanely boring stuff that I tend to rack most of my 18k up doing.

Say I put 10k onto the daily, 8k onto the proper car - that's a nice enough balance in my mind!

I'll be doing it around Christmas time I expect, I have a couple of contracts at work that I want to get finalised, then I'll look into it properly and look at biting the bullet.

Even now though, I can't ignore a tidy R8 V10 Plus - putting all of the 18k a year on that changing it - what a nice way to cover it. I have no doubt that the 570s is equally as good as an every day car - but my main concern is the depreciation rather than usability.

Haha there's no denying that the 650S has also crept onto the list... although, no decent ones in budget really
