Hello everyone,

I'm in a bit of dilemma.. and was hoping to draw on your expertise. My father passed away suddenly a few weeks ago from a heart attack. His cherished 2010 911 is now in my possession. He looked after it really well and is low mileage (17k). It has a full service hx as well. I love it and would hope to keep it with the view of appreciation. But my other half - (unsurprisingly) is preoccupied with running costs etc and say it will haemorrhage money

I am not sure whether to keep or sell ? and if I sell - What should I hope to get ? It is lovely.... and my heart says keep but my head is saying sell....

It is a 997.2 Carrera S - which has been kept in amazing condition. Shall I ignore the missus and keep ? smile

Cheers

i take it your getting it for free so how can it lose money?
Running costs will be more expensive than a normal car but you will be surprised.
Your other half is thinking about what she can do with the money if you sell but if I was you I would keep the 911 and remember your dad every time you drive it! driving

Really sorry for your loss.

Keep the car by whatever means possible. It's a special car in it's own right, but the fact that it was your dad's makes it irreplaceable.

As others have said, knowing it was your Dads pride and joy, and a fantastic 911 iteration, will make the driving experience even more special.

Keep it if you at all can....I certainly wouldn't rush into selling it and would take my time.

You say you love the car so if this overrides your aversion to possibly losing money via depreciation then keep it.

As others have said it will remind you of your father every time you drive it which really is priceless.

If you can afford to keep your Dad’s pride and joy why would you not?

It would put a smile on my face every time I got in it. Take it for a long drive to somewhere that was special to him, then see what your thinking is.

Firstly, sorry for your loss.

My view would be if it were my dads pride and joy I would keep it. With that low mileage you should be able to do 3-4K miles a year in it and it should cost less than £1k a year on servicing and maintenance for the foreseeable future. I would also say that a nicely kept and historied 997.2 is one of the least depreciation higher end cars you could own right now and could actually appreciate a little longer term. But given you didn’t buy it, the sentimental value combined with relatively low running costs for a brilliant premium sports car makes this a no brainer to keep.

On the other hand only you and your family understand your personal circumstances and everyone outside of that should respect your decision either way.

Good luck.

Really sorry to hear about your father.

I would keep the car, put all thoughts about cost from your mind and drive it as it was supposed to be. The memories of your father are beyond such things as money. I hope you enjoy the car for years to come and think of your dad every time you turn the key.

Pictures of the car needed methinks smile

If your other half can't see/appreciate the emotional attachment you most likely have to the car, you may want to consider exchanging her for a different model yikes

As others have said, you're unlikely to "lose" money on the car bearing in mind the circumstances it's ended up in your ownership, added to which a low miles '10 plate Gen 2 997 is unlikely to be a money pit anytime soon.

I say keep it at all costs !!

Depending on spec it is minimum high £30k car , whether you keep or sell depends if the money is 'better' used on reducing mortgage, loans, etc. Parents want the best for their kids so I am sure he would rather the 'asset' is used for the best cause.

It's also a terrible time to sell right now, with a combination of political instability and terrible weather.

Even if you do decide to sell it then doing so in Spring might be a better idea.

All the above is good advice. Don't take any rushed decisions. Give it until spring at least- definitely the best time to sell regardless.
If you're a car person, it's a win win on many fronts to keep it.
Best of luck with your desicion.

Many thanks for your insight guys... still at a bit of a loss ! perhaps you're right.... i'll leave it till spring / summer and make up my mind then.

I could keep it (it's a beautiful looking car - i'll put some pics up later) - but I have to buy my brother out - that's the other thing I forgot to say .....

If you love the car, what does appreciation matter?

You inherited the car at (I assume) no monetary cost, therefore whatever--and whenever--you sell it for, it will be profit.

If I was to inherit such a thing I'd be more interested in running costs and how I could keep it going in great condition rather than making £5/10k over the next couple of years vs. a sale in today's market.

Looks like your brother might be the complication. If he isn’t into cars, that is a problem as buying him out becomes a commitment (I’d do it in a flash BTW as it still is a relatively safe place for your money). If he’s a car guy have you raised the possibility of sharing it?

Losing parents often means families lose someone who pulls them together regularly so a common interest such as sharing a sports car, doing a few club meets and track days together might be a good way of sharing memories of your dad. I may be jumping way too ahead of reality however!

Do a couple of we buy any car websites and take the average for market rate, unfair to expect you to pay retail, currently advertised prices aren't necessarily selling...

This. Very fair approach. If he’s not happy with the websites take it to some dealers to ask for a cash bid. Retail is irrelevant in this instance.

Sad news - condolences.

Cars worth £40k trade. So £20k sound fair? Even if you add 30k miles over next 3 years you car should be worth £35k minimum for the foreseeable future. Best daily modern 911 made by Porsche the 997 series IMO especially the C2S. Had a C4S gen 2 and loved it wink
