Just heard on the news that apparently a 4yr old has been caught carrying a knife a school.

What is happening here?

A mum I know said a kid at her daughters school carries a knife, I guess they're around 7 or 8 - she was wondering whether to tell the teachers but wasn't sure through fears of repercussions.

I told her she should tell them.

Definitely- even if it’s an anonymous call to the head teacher and give the child’s name. Crikey it’s scary times.

I said to do it anonymously but she said that her daughter may be the only one who knows about it.

If the school has any sense, they'll do a check of a random sample (or the whole year group) ideally!

I've just spoken to her. She reported it and her daughter had to do a written statement. .

I watched that BBC Met Police programme earlier, they were focusing on people in London stabbing & killing each other.

One way of tackling it would be to increase detection and massively increase the penalties. Get caught carrying a knife above the proscribed size, go to court and the minimum sentence which can be handed down is 20 years, no parole.

There was a guy stopped in a car on this programme, I think they said they found 4 big knives in the car. The treatment of that individual was "released without charge".

If you really need to carry a knife for work, eg a chef, then it has to be in a locked case with the key elsewhere on your person. Not perfect but it might stop every second teenager in Tottenham (other boroughs are available) from sticking their mother's carving knife down the front of their trackies, especially if there are increased numbers of roaming plain clothes/plain van Stop & Search teams out there. Stop & Search should pose no threat to anyone not carrying; 30 seconds for a check and you're on your way. It might give the bleeding hearts a bit of indigestion, but I don't hear them wailing every time there's another knife death, so they need to reconsider their priorities.

Part of the problem is the massive underfunding of the CPS and courts. Someone charged today could well be waiting a year before trial. It's not practical to keep them all locked up for that length of time, so they're back on the streets and will re-offend.

Was the child wearing a red raincoat ?
You are getting mixed up with the film Don't Look Now

Don't see a problem, I can easily disarm a 4 year old, we get infested with them round here,
they get in through the skirting boards, little bds, they have your gypsy creams before you
know it .
