Sad to say that installing a 17.3GB game from a DVD can now be considered things from the dinosaur age, but I am currently doing it.

Far Cry 5 is one of my favourite games of recent years , streamed download for the original and I had wanted to try Far Cry New Dawn, but it was overpriced for what seems to be an add on rather than new game.

Amazon doing it for £16 though so I bought it. Then it came in the post and was the DVD set. Now I assumed it would be a box with the code and download link but actually was 3 DVDs of 17GB ! So I popped the first one in and guess what? My DVD drive that had not been used for longer than the Tin Man from the wizard of Oz needed a bit of oiling biggrin It's a grumpy old bugger it seems.

Now on disk 3 ..... still holding fingers crossed, just as fast as modern day downloads, how things have changed. It will probably still make me log on and then down load 2 GB of updates via the web biglaugh

The good old days

I was clearing out my loft a while back and threw out my 26 floppy disk set of MS Office. That's a maximum of 37MB, I've got spreadsheets that are bigger than that these days biggrin

I built a new PC last year and put a DVD drive in, but haven't used it once yet.

I remember the days of having 20 to 30 3.5" discs to install something and then finding disc 28 was missing.

I recall Monkey Island having 11 floppy disks.

One of the wing commander games had 6 Cd-roms (that’s FMV for you).

Don't remind me, 15 minutes to load my 737 simulator on a BBC micro and sometimes it would crash as soon as it started biggrin

The plane or the game? hehe

I have a whole load of C64 games and Spectrum too, keep meaning to put them on a shelf rather than letting them sit in their crates!

It was a long time ago but I think it was an approach and landing simulator so the plane crashes usually came 5 or 10 minutes in biggrin

That black humour 737 joke made me chuckle ... moving on ...

The new one contains 2 Petabytes of data, so using "modern" 1.44MB floppies then it would come on 1.4 billion floppy disks and would take you, at 30KB/s data transfer rate, approximately 22 years to install negating time to swap disks.

Luckily it's cloud based, pardon the pun.

That was Monkey Island 2. One of the best ever games IMO. My disk 11 had something wrong with it and so I had to wait about 20 years to finish it as a grown up. laugh

That sucks.

I replayed both a few years back. They’re still brilliant.
