Salary didn't "pro rata up" when moving to full time.
Discussion
In 2017 I started a two day per week job. In 2018 I went full time. I was told by my manager that my salary wouldn't "pro rata up" as they had to pay part-timers a higher hourly rate as people who are happy to work fewer days are harder to find. Whether this is true or not, I don't know.
I effectively took an 8.3% cut in my gross hourly pay and a much greater cut in my net hourly pay as I moved into taxable income.
I sucked it up as I needed the work and didn't want to argue and risk not getting the extra hours. Today I was discussing this with someone who was shocked and said they can't do this. I'm pretty sure they can do what the hell they like. Who's right?

Sure to recruit that would be the case but if you then have a permie in doing those hours who then same job but full time hours it would as you say be grossing up.
In my 35 years in work I have not once heard of the situation you described you have been in, instead simply grossing up.
Are you sure you have the facts straight?

I can only report what I was told. If the facts are different then I am not a party to them.Bussolini said:
They can do what they like (provided of course they are paying you minimum wage). So can you - if you can get a better paid job elsewhere, you can leave.
Ha ha - I'd like to. Unfortunately I'm a 45 year old doing a job that anyone over their 20s seems to be considered too old for. As soon as the culture became apparent I was applying left, right and centre. Getting anywhere with it is another matter!Welshbeef said:
Can you share the type of work.
This is a Mac Operator role though most of my experience is in more conceptual, creative design work which is what I'm trying to get back into.Welshbeef said:
Personally I think it’s disgusting and shows no respect to the employee.
I agree, but they don't care about that. The whole ethos of the place as pay as little as you can and flog people to within an inch of their life. s
t pay, no overtime pay, no time off in lieu of overtime pay, no pay increment at all this year, bare minimum pension contribution by employer, bare minimum notice period (one week for each complete year of service) from them but they expect a month from you, taking annual leave off you because they decide to close for a few days over Christmas... etc.MitchT said:

Sounds miserable - work as hard as you can to get a better job elsewhere.
