I want to get a home cloud so my wife can free up her iphone with the thousands of photos she got and keeps taking.

Looking on amazon at the WD home cloud seems to be ideal. However the reviews don’t Make good reading all seem really technical and I’m not sure if it the one for me.

It will only be used for basic upload and downloads of phots, simple stuff really. Can anyone here give me an idea If I should go for it or point me in the right direction of something that will work better.

Many thanks

Why don't you pay for iCloudz? Perfect ting for what you need. Especially since it syncs flawlessly, unlike other methods.

I think I would rather have everything stored at home.

Storage is one of the most complicated areas of computing
Something like a mycloud is about as untechnical you are going to get
If you're deleting the origonal copies and they are important then you should really think about storing them in 2 places.

iCloud or Google photos much simpler.

Less likely for them to dissapear than a locally stored HDD to corrupt etc.

How are you going to back up the home cloud storage?

Home NAS will all require some degree of technical chops, synology are good. I use an app called photosync with mine but it wasn't simple to set up.

ICloud is a few quid each month, simple to set up and uses a much more robust setup than any home system will ever have. Worth doing some reading to see if you can resolve your concerns with cloud, for this usage it's a very good option.

OP, are you on Amazon Prime? I can recommend setting up Amazon Photos on her phone to automatically upload, then delete photos from her phone.

Thanks people.

Currently uploading 6800 photos to amazon.

Going forward I think I’m going to buy one of these

Just concerned with the low review scores the WD clouds get.

I use the Synology DS218J and 2x 2tb Firecuda disks - c£320 on Amazon.

Really simple to set-up and use and paid for itself a couple of weeks back when I had some PC "issues" which could have lost a lot of photographs and work related documents

As Mgd_uk said above, you still need to back that up somewhere. It has two drives to provide some redundancy if one fails but they are NOT a backup of each other. If you accidentally delete something it will be deleted from both drives.

What concerns me most about the drive you link are all the reviews saying it's only accessible with a web connection. Does that mean it's sending everything out and then back into your home? If so, that's going to be hideously slow and where is all your data going?

Something like the Synology linked above would be better IMO, it'll appear as a mapped drive on your network and, if you want to access it away from home you can if you want to. Download DS Photos app for iOS or Android and it will sync your photos.

The Synology has several apps (either on it or free) for you to back up the whole thing to the cloud. I use Backblaze B2 which is cheaper and easier than AWS.
