Drop in performance after graphics card upgrade?
Discussion
Hoping for a little advice here..
I have an aging computer (Dell Studio XPS 8100) which isn't used for gaming but i wanted to increase the desktop resolution for a new monitor (32" Panasonic TV).
The old graphics card was a 1GB nvidia GTS240..
The new one is still old, but is a 2GB nivida Geforce GT 630 (£10 ebay purchase)
My primary objective was successful as the new card has an HDMI out and i can now run at 1920 x 1080. I think it may have been 1024 x 768 on the old card.
But my windows experience score has dropped, and so has the Frame rate if i run a benchmark.
Old score:

New score:

The only thing i can think of is the drivers are causing a problem as no matter what i do, I cant seem to install any drivers newer than the 2013 drivers that windows has installed.
If i go to the nvidia site and search for the exact drivers for that card and my version of windows (win 7 premium 64bit) it downlaods the 500mb driver and then spits up an error message saying my OS is not compatible AND the hardware can not be found!
Obviously the card is installed and working and windows recognizes it:

If anyone has any suggestions where or how I can install a newer driver I would be grateful!
Unless i have got my wires crossed and the newer bigger card is actually not as good as the old one!

cant offer to much help, that is some old stuff your running.
An option to try and get video drivers working would be DDU.
download the drivers you want to install and save them somewhere, disconnect from the internet so windows cant try and install whatever crap it wants to, boot into safe mode, Run DDU to remove old drivers, reboot and install drivers you want to, then reconnect to internet.

Yup, it is a bit of an old POS but it is just a web browser and you tube viewer and it is absolutely fine for that purpose An option to try and get video drivers working would be DDU.

I don't need a £1k gaming machine..
Thank you for the tip, I will have a look at that option.

Is it actually making the PC noticeably slower or are you just chasing numbers?
I am just chasing numbers, as more is better, right?
As i said in my OP, my primary goal was achieved, I can now use the TV to its full potential. I just thought that in upgrading the card i should also expect to increase the perfomance.

Not meaning to be a pain but something is telling me that there was a post in this forum that mentioned TV's not being anything like as good as monitors, then again could be wrong
Off topic but.........
yes, in a way. TV's typically have fewer pixels and lower refresh rates but for the purposes of browsing the internet that isn't a massive issue.Off topic but.........
And I couldn't find a 32" Monitor for £30

Ok, this is good news, a cheap TV may well be added to the collection
Yamas
Are you sure you have a 2GB GT 630?
there are 3 versions, 2x 1GB cards and 1x 2GB card - https://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/desktop-gpus/ge...
A GTS 240 beats a 1GB GT 630 on handling various graphics demands - http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTS-240-vs-GeForce... which sounds similar to your results.

Both those cards are from Q2 2014 and are much of a muchness.
If you google a benchmark comparison there really isnt much between them, and as mentioned above, your old card even beats your new one in some areas.
Basically if you just want to up that Windows bench number, you are wasting your time.
Just be glad you can get FullHD res now.
And big TVs do not give better displays from PCs, unless you go high end. They just dont have the refresh rates monitors do. Even the top gamers prefer smaller screens.

According to this:
http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTS-240-vs-GeForce...
the old one is from 2009 and the 'new' one is from 2013 but as you say there isn't much to tell between the two cards apart from the 'new' one having an HDMI port!
I am not noticing any downside to this card in actual operation and it all looks better so for £10, it is a win.
Just for the hell of it i just launched red alert (as i said i dont game anymore) and it is certainly quite different on a 32" screen at 1920x1080 than when i used to play it on a small monitor at 800x600 or something! You have to sit pretty close to the screen to see which soldiers are which though

Try this download page
https://cncnet.org/red-alert
It is now freeware. I am not sure if that is the version I have, I don't launch 'red alert.exe' I use a launcher that does some trickery. I would be happy to send you my red alert folder if you have a drop box or google page or what ever the kids call it these days!
