Childcare Vouchers…

We currently have a little boy who is at nursery – we have salary sacrifice vouchers through our employers to cover some of the cost of this.

In January he’ll receive his 30 free hours from the State and this will cover his nursery costs.

However we’ve just had baby number two – who in 10 months time will start at nursery too. Now the scheme for vouchers has finished and doesn’t allow you to join for a new child. You have to join the new scheme.

The question I have is are vouchers ‘child specific’ or can we continue to salary sacrifice and then redeem those vouchers against child number two when he starts at nursery, or do I have to use the new scheme for child no 2?

Check with the nursery, they might allow you to use the value of existing vouchers against child #2. Whenever I made a payment using vouchers I had to put the child name as the reference, so I suppose I could have put the name of AN Other child and they would have just reconciled without knowing.

I may have also heard of someone who overpaid using vouchers and received a cash refund from the nursery.

As far as i know (and i've been using CCV for 10 years) its the date YOU, as a parent joined the scheme rather than the child that affects what/ how much you can buy in CCVs.
When i wanted to reduce the amount i bought out of gross income i was advised to reduce it to £1 a month to keep on the scheme i joined rather than reduce it to zero and then be capped at a lower rate as a member of a "new" scheme.

This is via Edenred, there is no child-specific mention in their rules.

Certainly on my scheme the vouchers are not child specific and you can hold them in the account for a while then use them later and with more than one voucher per month for a while if you want

That's good news then.

I will check to be on the safe side but all we have to do is provide a name when redeeming the voucher.
Ours also with Eden red & Care4

And one other query - whilst not child specific are they nursery specific or again can you accumulate and then use at which ever approved provider your child happens to be at?

Mine are not nursery specific. You can hold them and use them with whatever provider later

On the old scheme they basically work like a cash balance that you accrue, which you can only spend with scheme members (i.e. child care providers). Not child or provider-specific.

Have you checked to see if there is any benefit in moving to the new scheme? I was on a voucher scheme through work but after putting the details in for the newer government scheme I found we saved around £250 per year by moving to that one so that's what we've done. It's not a huge amount but when it comes to childcare anything saved is helpful.

Yeah - benefits us to stay on vouchers.

Which is why i'm keen to keep paying into them despite little 'un number 2 not going to nursery until next year.

We are in exactly the same situation as you, 30 funded hours start in january and just had baby two.

With ours, we have a web account with the voucher provider, from there we can register however many children we want and as many childcare providers as we want. We then simply select which ones the payment is for.

With your nursery do you have to pay a top up with your funded hours? I think ours charge £1.10 an hour.

I'm sure it's not a top up fee: they are illegal! Most likely it's a fee for lunches or to cover the 14 weeks outside term time that the government don't fund blended over the hours you are using.

Yeah we have to pay for 'extras'

-Lunch
-Forest School
-Foreign Languages

Couple of quid a day.

Assuming you can use vouchers for these costs?

Should be able to. Vouchers are just the same as cash to the provider
