So the government are consulting on plans to introduce Green Number Plates for EV's.

The new must have accessory on a school run and a way of shaming non-EVs from the road.

Also a cheap way of enforcing an 'electric vehicles only' zone in city centres.

I'm surprised they've not done this before, it is pretty much zero cost to administer once the laws have been passed and it can only help electric car sales.

I read this in the Metro.

It will be fantastic for qualifying cars until the rush for green plates means that numbers overwhelm the bus lanes and they all get taken away.

I also anticipate someone ‘forgetting, they were in the wrong car that morning, so should be let off and nobody reminded them etc..

Why does it need a different colour? The reg will identify it as electric anyway.

Not really, since what’s to stop any owner putting one on their car - EV or not? I don’t imagine it will be impossible to source one, much like getting a dodgy MOT is now.

Can literally get one made up now on one of these show plate websites, either fully green or with the green band to replace "euro band"

That will take a bit of getting used to! Looks like someone has bought a new plate but hasn't taken the sticky cover off the new plate!

These will be a millenial chick-magnet.

Like an MGB in about 1975.

The liblabs will love this.
Will they have another plate saying how un-green the making of the electricity they use is?

It’s already like this in China. Green plate = EV

Heard about this on the radio earlier they said it could lead to cheaper parking for EV's, as we all know a parked EV emits a lot less C02 than a parked ICE car rolleyes

No, a parked EV emits more** CO2 than an ICE when parked...
...because it'll be charging*.

It's a way to tell at a glance whether something is an EV or not... seems sensible if they're going to continue to legislate in favour of EVs in terms of where they can drive, where they can park, etc. I dare say a few people will try it on putting green plates on ICE cars but probably only a vanishingly small number and it wouldn't be particularly hard to police... anyone know if existing ANPR cameras can detect colour?

As above we wouldn't be the first country to do it.

Would have thought addressing the weaknesses of plates as a means of identifying vehicles was a higher priority.

I can foresee sales of electric vehicles in certain parts of Glasgow and Northern Ireland plummeting to zero.

Will look hideous when clashing with certain colours, although granted no worse than the yellow rear plates we currently have!

Now, if they allowed white plates front and rear for an EV (german style) that'll look much better. biggrin

Before long driving a dirty car like my old Focus will entail having a woman in a nun's habit walk in front of me saying "shame".

An easy way of identifying which vehicles haven't paid enough tax on their fuel yet.
