Red light ticket for car i have never had?

Hi guys hoping someone on here can give me an idea of what will happen next. I got a letter asking me to identify the driver of a van that had run a red light in Glasgow city center I have never even seen the van nevermind owned it. I called the number on the letter and they advised me to send the letter back with the section stating that I have never been responsible for the vehicle they said they got my details from the insurance company. So other than the possible identity fraud what's likely to happen next? Do they just take my word for it or am I going to end up trying to prove my innocence?

I thought enforcement establishments got keeper details from DVLA.

That's what I thought as well but the guy I spoke to was certain it was through the insurance. I tried using askmid however it's no longer insured.

I think getting owner from insurance will be a plan B where the new owner hasn't registered the van in his name with DVLA.

As for the OP getting the letter? Either a mistake somewhere or the van owner has insured it in a wrong name and address to avoid triggering ANPR cameras. More likely a mistake though I would have thought.

I was talking to another PHer a couple of months ago at a Sunday service who'd had the same issue. He'd never owned the car.

It turned out to be an insurance fraud and someone had taken out a policy with an online insurer in their name using a stolen credit card for someone else and a random email address, so he knew nothing about it. The letters came to him as the DVLA registered address was old or false, so the insurance was the next pipeline.

I think he said he had four or five NIP's to respond to, but they all went away in the end when the police contacted the insurer concerned and realised it wasn't him

Correct - if vehicle not updated with DVLA then tickets go to the insured.

I know this because some young, culturally enriching young man last year bought a Mazda RX7, insured it with Direct Line (a certificate arrived at my house along with a demand for payment) - but hadn't actually got it by paying for it. No idea how it was done but it ends up showing on ASKMID for a few weeks as insured. It was insured in my name at my address (totally wrong occupation, DOB etc) with this chap as a named driver. First I knew was when I started getting parking tickets, speeding tickets etc. I sent back the first one with the "it's not me" stuff filled in. I also rang the ticket office in Hyde and spoke to a copper there who was brilliant - he could see loads of stuff on the system that I'd not even received yet - he did something or other, flagged the vehicle up and just told me to ignore all of the stuff that arrived. That's the last I heard of it.
