Hit a speed ramp at 60mph. Help.

Hit a poorly marked ramp in the road where they were laying a new surface down. I was doing 60 and turning right so one wheel took all the impact. Where should I start looking for damage 😭

It’s a new A4 black edition and I’m gutted! First car that I’ve ever spent money on and I was ‘trying’ to look after it carefully it drives straight but I’m not sure where to start inspecting. Any tips much appreciated.

That's a heck of a speed for a road being resurfaced. Especially turning right too

If it drives straight that’s a good thing - cars can make a lot of noise but are surprisingly resilient!

Are you feeing any vibration through the steering wheel? None is a good sign.

If you’re wanting to check for piece of mind, the first thing I would check would be the alloy wheel/tyre as they normally take the brunt of any force. Ideally take the wheel off and look for any distortion in the rim or bulging of the tyre - inside edge and out.

While the wheel is off you can look at the suspension bits, but if driving straight with no knocking noises they’re likely fine and have done what they’re designed to do.

Wheels and suspension components. If someone deemed a speed ramp necessary why were you doing 60mph whilst turning right? I would hate to see how you drive something you aren’t looking after.

It's probably worth getting down to your local garage with a ramp and slipping them a few quid for 10 mins under the car.

At that speed, I doubt you will have suffered any damage.

Check wheels for flat spots, tyres for bulges, springs for broken coils.

I take it that it didn't bottom out.

Hopefully you can chalk it up to experience.

Felt like it bottomed out, it was a hell of hit. Would the wheels bend before anything structural?

I was driving quick but wasn’t expecting a big ole bump on a corner with no ramp sign.

It might have felt like a hell of a bang but suspension can take huge forces if they are in the "right direction". There's too many factors to comment further without inspection.

Wheels can buckle quite easily and if they haven't then that is a good sign.

The main thing is - does it drive OK, then look for visual damage and if you are still concerned, get the geometry checked.

In fact - if you get the geo checked, they'll do the other checks anyway.

UPDATE:

So I got my car in the air and checked it over. 4 bent wheels. 3 with big flat spots and 1 minor.

Do anyone have any advise on where to start with this?

Would a repair shop we able to get them true again?

Also Ive watched the dash-cam footage back and the ramp sign was round the corner, so no time to brake, wondering if thats a council claim job? Like a pot-hole? Probably cant be bothered with the effort but just wondering if anyone has done this?

Just buy a set of wheels from Ebay. That will be your cheapest solution.

Regarding the Footage, post it up with a minute or so before the impact, so we can see the signage , road conditions, speed, etc.

Pristine Wheels were able to straighten one of my alloys that took a big impact. Worth at least getting an opinion from a wheel refurbisher before you splash out on new wheels.
