Because we can

I don't understand what they've actually done or achieved, other than to make a simple, well understood, societal norm into something needlessly complex that the target audience don't stand a chance of using effectively.

That well known smartphone OAP user group - that's just brilliant.Someone is in the wrong job.
It's already having a massive effect - the local
"following on from our ridiculous decision to remove the sound for people with sight issues, we've decided to make this accessible for younger generations via a smartphone app - which as we all know is the most efficient way of interacting with street furniture, we know it doesn't mitigate removing the sound - but hahahahahhahahahaha it's your money we're spending".

Is it really a good enough reason to do something, just because we can?
I'm thinking about the new traffic light controlled pedestrial crossings, that don't bleep anymore when green and are operated by an App on your phone via bluetooth.

Why not just simply get the crossing to beep? Why does everything on this fI'm thinking about the new traffic light controlled pedestrial crossings, that don't bleep anymore when green and are operated by an App on your phone via bluetooth.

I understand the need to remove the bleeps when located near residential areas (as you won't want that going off whilst you're trying to sleep).
king planet have to be app controlled? However, as posters above have alluded to, the majority who rely on the bleeps the most (elderly) are the least likely to be able to use the app. For the younger blind folk it is a good idea.

No it's not. It's a terrible idea.In what way is getting out your phone, finding the app, waiting for it to work out where you are and what the closest traffic light is, then clicking the button easier than just, er, pressing the button on the crossing. Particularly for a blind person who presumably has to do all of that using voice prompts.
It's ludicrous and I honestly thought at first that the site was a spoof one a la Southend News Network.
Guessing they didn't see the court case with the lady that got hit by a cyclist while crossing the road looking at her phone
Crossings need a big sign saying "Put the phone away and concentrate on crossing the road" not an app ffs giving people an excuse to pay their phones more attention.
