Jag, Porka or Bimmer

Jag XK (X150) | Porsche Cayman 987 | BMW Z4 Coupe
All are in the similar price range over here (around the 20k mark).

Plenty of highway miles, a bit of fun touring.
Which one to choose and why?
Alternative choices?

I would take the Porsche.
At my old job the 2 bosses had an xkr and a Cayman, both the shape older than you are considering.
A trip in the Porsche just felt more special somehow.

So far as I am aware the jag XK150 is a late 1950's'/early 1960's Jaguar. Truly sublime in looks but not comparable to any Porsche. Presumably you mean the 5.0 litre XKR? Get the Porsche 987.2. If you can, get one with PDK and the sports steering wheel (others that call themselves 'purists' will disagree of course!). Sports mode is good too! I have had one for three years and it is by far the best car I've ever driven. The TVR Chimaera has been my favourite car but the Porsche is probably the best.

I've been constantly flipping between these three myself. I think i'm going to plump for the Porsche 987 in the end. I do like the Jag and my father has one (and adores it) it does have a throaty bellow that im looking for but the road tax and insurance is significantly higher than the Porsche does put me off slightly.

The Jag all day long. Porsches look so bland, they just blend into all the other boring cars you mostly see.

Jag would be the GT car, the other two are sports cars. IF you're looking for fast , comfortable motorway driving. That should be your choice.

I had a 987.1 as my only car for ten years. It was surprisingly comfortable for touring, which included some transcontinental trips. I found the ride on PASM much less punishing than on my previous 996.

It would be the XKR for me out of the three.

I have a Z4 Coupe and love it but honestly out of those three it would be the Jaguar, then the BMW and then the Porsche.

I suspect the BMW will hold its value the best though (if that’s important to you).

I've had a Z4 Coupe for over 5 years as a weekend/funday car and still love it.

Jag was never an option because I wanted a manual gearbox, and a Cayman wasn't within budget at the time - plus I'd be a bit worried about the risk of getting a big bill.

You need to decide what you want out of the car. The XK8 would surely be the most relaxed and comfortable with the Cayman the most capable for a back road blast, with the Z4 Coupe somewhere in between.

Being honest the shape of the Z4 was also a factor for me. I always dreamed of getting a FHC E-Type one day, but that's never going to happen now so the Z4C seemed the nearest alternative that was affordable!

For what you are requiring, it's the XKR....it's what Iwould choose.

I have an X150 XK, and the only reason I'd consider the other two options is for their manual boxes (and aren't BMW manuals awful these days anyway?)

So if you're thinking two pedals for either German, just get the Jag. After all, it's got a V8...
