Hi folks

I moved to a place about 7 miles from my place of work (a lot closer than I used to be). There is about a mile of B road (straight), 5 miles of A road (including a mile of dual carriageway), 2 very busy roundabouts and maybe 500m of ‘town’ road to get to work.

I’d hoped to be able to cycle at times, but no way will I cycle on the a66. I drive a Freelander, and it’s just silly for this (I mostly bought it to tow my race car), and have been thinking of a bike. I was born in ’71, so my understanding is I can have what I want, so long as I do a cbt, but I don’t want a super bike or anything that will tempt me to be silly. I’m not returning to biking, my only experience being paddock bikes, all I want is something capable of a dual carriageway. Any suggestions? I don’t want to do twisties, my internal sense of self preservation battles against my ‘go’ sense, hence the race car. Budget about 3k.

You can only ride a 125 after doing a CBT and that will be on L plates.

You’ll need to do your full test to ride anything else.

+1

You need to do a full motorcycle test before you can ride anything over 125cc!

This notwithstanding, any suggestion bike wise? I’m assuming Japanese would be best (speaking as the ex owner of a garelli 50 and current owner of a 25cc moto guzzi moped...)

Big 125cc scooter will do all of that.

If you are looking at only doing a CBT I would recommend something like a Honda PCX 125. I rode quite a few whilst working for a Honda dealer and having never used scooters before I found them really enjoyable and well put together.

Otherwise a Honda Varadero 125 would be a good shout and if you get a good one will hold its money well.

This. A Honda PCX125 or Forza.

But you'll be told on here you'll need a 1000cc superbike on here to do this journey wink

I think a GSX-R750 would be perfectly adequate if there are not too many hills on the commute.

A good old Honda CB125F whilst you go through your test although I've seen some quite cool Chinese derived 125's. Once you've passed your test the world is your lobster so to speak. Keeping on your italian theme I ride a Moto Guzzi V7 to commute into London, it's a simple agricultural old thing that looks good in shop windows (I've got a beard, work near Hoxton although sadly I'm too old to be hip). However you really need a sporty bike if you are going to use it at the weekend.

If its only for the commute a 125 scooter will work well.

An electric push bike could be another even cheaper option for a short commute....no road tax, insurance, petrol etc.

You really do need a superbike....but if you're not prepared to take my advice, do something sensible like go with the suggestions of the 125 scoots. Perfect for that job, and very economical.

Isn't the Piaggio MP3 (300cc) able to be ridden on a car licence?

If thats the case, better than a 125 CBT option!

Yes if you get the wider track LT version it can be ridden on car licence as a 3 wheeler and is a great commuting tool....a friend ran one year round for a few years

The answer in the real world is NEVER, Speed Triple ...... I'd rather get a bus.
