Wet footwell and condensation in old golf
Discussion
Hi Piston heads
I have a MK 4 VW Golf S reg ('98) . The drivers foot well is saturated with masses of water and alot of condensation has been forming inside car.
It has happened before and I had to have filter changed or something. I had it fixed but is now back 2 years later. Unsure what is really wrong and what to do.Not sure if it is because of all the rain we have had.....
Is there anything I can do myself to rectify or do I need filters changed again or something ?
Cheers

It's common for the cabin air intake to have a strainer to keep debris out, and a chamber that separates air and water with water leaving out the bottom via a small drain tube. If debris gets past the strainer it can eventually block the drain, allowing the chamber to fill up with rain water than eventually overflows into the cabin.
If you know you have had problems with a filter in the past it seems quite likely it's the same problem this time.
If you can locate the cabin air filter and take a look at it, it will probably be obvious whether this is the problem.

Well if it never rained, less chance of water getting in lol.
Really it will need fully dried out, carpet/sound proofing removed and dried otherwise the water can sit there almost forever.
Check in round all scuttle panel areas, or under the dash, try stuffing blue roll or something around the place so you can keen an eye on it as to where any water might be entering. Run hose or power wash over the car etc
Could be window seal/trims, scuttle area, door seal etc etc
Or a slightly more modern approach is a smoke machine, and use it to see where any leaks may be. Although the one I got, when using baby oil as they suggested...the smoke stinks like f
k lol.
Have other fluid to try but havent yet.

I have no idea how to find the filter
Google is your friend. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJ8i5S3bpX4 looks like it might be the sort of thing you're looking for.
Drivers foot-well more likely to be the door secondary skin panel to door shell seal/bead breached causing water in the cabin
common fault on the MK4 of this age , easy to check remove door panel and you usually get witness marks/staining or if recent rain the painted shell will be wet
