The 200 bhp super naked club starts.
Discussion
Seriously ! Over 200 bhp seems to be the bench mark now Ducati has revealed its v4 street fighter, its not like its 201 either, 220 with the exhaust
The new z 1000 at 200bhp also shows it colours. I struggle to hold on to a 1290r at WOT through 3rd 4th and 5th, by 6th I am out the crouch and fighting to gather my thoughts and eye sight back
Does anyone have any rumours about a new 2020 tuono ?
I've been waiting ages for the new KTM 1290r to appear and seems like November is the time they will release the full details of the bike, I am actually hoping it will be less than 200bhp and circa 16k. A 200 plus 1290r doesn't seem like a pleasurable place to be at my age
And there was me thinking early this year euro 5 regulations would see bikes coming out with the same power as last years stuff .
Roll on next spring so I can get my new bike, I haven't got a clue which one it will be but it looks like we better get used to seriously over developed neck muscles for the 2020 super naked class
Side note, I cant see ktm getting anywhere near 200 bhp with the old lc8 engine and euro 5 but all will be revealed soon .

Any truth in the rumor that the motorcycle industry are producing these 200+bhp super nakeds just to receive kickbacks from sports massage bods?

As much as I love a fast bike I fail to see the point in these bikes on UK roads these days, I bet they are all fun to ride but seriously I struggle to use 145bhp most of the time and I ride fairly quickly on the roads, the only time my bike felt lacking in power was on a trackday surrounded by race bikes.

there is no pointin fact, those here who "stretch the legs" of their 200+hp sportsbikes on the public roads either lie or are reckless and eventually will lead to regulatory limitations on output or worse
I’m waiting for the superleggera version.
This one is too heavy and not enough power. I’m all for development but who is going to ride one of these at even 7k rpm on the road with any regularity? Never mind ring it’s neck.
Even if you did and got away with it I bet you’d feel like you had been in a fight for a few days after.

There's a huge difference between "there's no point" and "there are a limited number of places where the full performance potential can be used".
I ride the faired version (the H2 SX) and find opportunities to utilise large parts of the full performance capabilities safely and with out being reckless. I accept that "just occasionally" I may, unintentionally, exceed a speed limit but that can be said for just about every PTW that is more than a restricted 50cc learner bike for 16 year olds.

We went through the regulatory thing at 100hp, fret not ! in fact, those here who "stretch the legs" of their 200+hp sportsbikes on the public roads either lie or are reckless and eventually will lead to regulatory limitations on output or worse

yeah right

have you given a thought to becoming a comedian?

And maybe you do utilize full performance, I won't argue. Maybe in Dolomites speed limit is 200kmh.
I can say that I pull the gas and go from 60(kmh) to 80 in 3rd or 4th gear in a split second on my GSXR1000, and I obviously barely spin the engine in these gears at that speed. Even accelerating to 120 is not utilizing the performance that bike has, unless one does it in 1st gear maybe, which is reckless and the speed is anyway reached before the bike gets into its stride even in 1st.
I haven't yet experienced a 200bhp bike, my full power gen1 Tuono has 130bhp+(and importantly V-twin levels of torque) with no aids and at times it's a handful and is the most dangerous bike I have. The Diavel is 162bhp, it is brutal in acceleration but feels far safer than the Tuono ever does, a combination of longer wheelbase and the safety net of electronics albeit they are turned down to their least intrusive they are there for those 'moments' that on the Tuono need to be dealt with manually. Once you take this out of the equation, the fear factor is nowhere near as alive and it kind of skewers the perspective somewhat and allows one to take liberties that are perhaps beyond ones skill set.
As electronics get more advanced they can make 200bhp useable in a way that they simply wouldn't be without, particularly in uncontrolled conditions. I guess one will never halt the constant march of progress, for those who don't like it, there are a plethora of modern classic analogue bikes available.
Rather than focus on hp, I wish they would get into a race for light weight. The more hp, the more reinforced the chassis needs to be and the more stress everything is under. It's a pity that hp is the main driving force in this arms race and yet it's most likely consumer led. I'd love to see these bikes approaching 165kg wet, rather than another 200+kg, 200+bhp missile.
At least this time around (after the 100bhp war), the electronics make a huge difference to safety. A 200bhp bike with electronics would be a safer bet than any lower but still considerably powered bike without and the entry level for skill required to use it considerably lower also, I don't say that as a good thing, but it is certainly safer for their riders than those bikes without them allowing manufacturers to 'responsibly' up the power.

DIAVEL is a hoot. It revs out at 9k or so, doesn’t it? I remember having fun riding that bike and feeling like king of the road. :-)
Maybe I’m wrong, maybe it’s possible to use full performance of liter naked on the road, given much lower rev red line. Modern liter sportbike on the road is another matter, imho.

I think as already said the electronics will put a certain safety barrier for those that want to push their bikes in the corners winding on the throttle etc
My current super naked claims 175, i fitted the akra exhaust and race map which is meant to give a mid more mid to top and a couple more bhp
Yes it's ludicrous for the road but I love it. I don't always ride fast and when I think about it a great deal of the riding is mid range revs
The only times I've done track days on it I've always wanted more power up top (I've never wanted more than what my gsxr gives in comparison)
