Mk7 GTI - worth it upgrade over Mk5?
Discussion
Apart from the Mk5's blue dash illumination & audible turbo, Mk7 all the way!
Mk7 is a match or improvement in all areas, can't think of any downsides from the Mk5, Mk7 generally feels more competent & refined all round. Wise to go from 5 to 7 as 6 in my experience was just a badly put together Mk5.

I've not driven the manual, but the DSG seems to suit the car very well. if you think you might want to tweak it, worth looking for the performance pack for the LSD that comes as standard with it (but make sure the oil's been changed at 3 years old, as it's often missed due to service staff not being aware it's a PP)
Ours is a loaded spec 65 plate and appears to have lost little value since we bought it at a year old privately, I think in part due to supply issued with the Mk7.5 with the emissions reg changes.

Prefer the looks of the Mk7.5 but out of my budget.
Do things like heated seats and parking sensors come as standard on these?
Parking sensors front and rear are standard - rear view camera was an extra (but can be retrofitted, as ours has been)Do things like heated seats and parking sensors come as standard on these?
Heated seats should also be fitted (winter pack is standard on the GTI)
I still love our mk5 GTi, had it 12 years, 140k miles.
Modern cars (and I've got one as well) are just too refined for me, feels like I am driving a computer on wheels. They have their place (a dull stop-start commute), but for driving for pleasure I prefer our old GTi, it feels like it has the right balance of modernity but not too much tech that takes over everywhere.

Leather was a £1800 option new and it wasn’t very nice leather to be honest, so not many people specced it.
It's not great quality for the money, but still infinitely preferable to the standard cloth option, if you have kids. I wouldn't say it's any worse than the leather in the x3 Audis I've owned, except possibly the S8. Luckily owner #1 of ours specced it, but agree with the OP that it very much reduces your choice on the 2nd hand market. Not in any particular rush to be fair, but seeing as the Mk8 is almost upon us, I’m hoping this pushes Mk7 prices further down.
RE the leather, how on earth did VW charge £1800 for it?! No wonder most cars have the cloth.
I sat in a friend’s Mk7 2.0 TDI GT the other day and the ride was more firm than I thought. What’s the GTI like?

Really liked mine for the 42k miles and 2 years that I owned it but it did feel quite sterile. Don't get me wrong it was a great car and did everything well but it just didn't seem to have any character for me.
There are some good options on these if you can fi d one that the original owner got carried away. The dynamic headlights are something that I still miss.

If I sold mine to WBAC today I'd only lose a maximum of £5k on what I paid for it at a year old (nearly 3 years ago now), but I know I'd get far more than WBAC are offering because of the spec. There are loads of base spec Mk7s about, due to leasing and not wanting to cover the options costs during a lease, but suspect those who want specific options on the used market will be prepared to pay more, so I don't see values dropping markedly with the arrival of the Mk8 unless it proves utterly stellar compared to the Mk7.
