Hiya! =) i'm new to this site and was just wondering whether andbody could help diagnose my ill car! There's a loud ticking noise coming from (I think) under the bonnet, i'm sure it's louder than usual. I know engines are meant to tick, but i'm sure mine is starting to tick abnormally loud. Also, i find that when i change gear the ticking gets worse. What could be the problem? Any help is appreciated! =)
Oh yeah, one more thing. I had a new cam belt fitted a few months ago (luckily it didn't snap and i was able to replace it in time). I just thought i'd add this info. incase it had something to do with the ticking.

Depends very much on the ticking sound.
Is it at engine speed, or a multiple there of, or at road speed, or a multiple?
Roughly where on the engine is it coming from?
What sort of car is it?
It might be fatal, on the other hand, it could be one of the very run of the mill ticking sounds that engines naturally make.

If it's associated with the gearchange it could be the clutch.

I'm really sorry, but i dont understand the road speed or engine speed thing! My car is a Hyundai Accent Coupe, it has done alot of miles (almost 90,000!)
I hope it isn't fatal.
The previous owner of the car had a new clucth fitted (not sure how long ago though).

Well...
If it's at the engine speed, the rate of the tick will increase when you push the throttle.
If it's at road speed, the rate of tick will increase as the road speed increases.
The first you can test stationary on the drive, the second you have to test on the move. Wait until a clear bit of road, temporarily put the car in neutral and adjust your speed gently using the brake alone.

Could be tappets, or could be as simple as a frayed drive belt clicking as it runs through the pulleys, but my guess would be with Kevin - a blowing manifold gasket or a cracked manifold.
Unfortunately we are all just guessing - it is impossible to diagnose engine noises with certainty over the internet.
Your best bet would be to get a garage or car-knowledgeable friend to look at it ASAP.
If it is a blowing manifold gasket, the parts are a couple of quid, but unless you have a boyfriend who is handy with his spanners, you're going to have to pay for a few hours labour to take the manifold off, replace the gasket, and put everyhing back together again.
