Morning all.

I have a need for another car to either accompany my 7 series. Primary reasons are to save piling lots of miles on it and the maintenance costs are becoming pretty expensive.

I love that car though and it's brilliant for long drives and has all of the Roy's to keep me comfy and the family comfy when needed.

I could perhaps entertain replacing it but I guess the residuals on the car are now pretty low, according to various online checks they state it may be "worth" around £4500 to a trader - no idea about private.

So, to the point then, what is the most comfortable, well spec'd car we can arrive at for £5k?

If it is the primary car it needs to be comfy and have Bluetooth prep. Xenon headlights are high on the list also.

If your primary objective is to save money and keep miles off your pride and joy - getting a well specced car for £5k might prove equally as ruinous as keeping the 7er as a daily.

Therefore, I will throw a well specced Nissan Note into the ring.

But I suspect it is not what you are after? We have had one for the last 7 years as a workhorse and with £0 tax, toys galore, 60+mpg, etc it fills our needs extremely well. Nothing has gone wrong with it and regular servicing is all that is needed. My wife has a bad back and this thing is truly comfortable for her needs with the two kids.

I suspect a Volvo of some description might work for you in the cheaper/ well specced and comfortable category?

Thanks, that's not a bad shout actually.

And yes, i worry that a car of the vintage i'm looking at may well be a pain to maintain as it'll be a bit longer in the tooth.

Or.. Do i go and buy a 192 and convince the wife that cos it's a clio it's cheap..

I thought the same - if you're after something even vaguely similar to the 7 series then £5k is unlikely to purchase you trouble-free motoring - would be surprising if £5k + the costs of keeping the second car on the road were less than the cost of keeping the 7 going. Having said that, basically you want a big saloon free of sporting pretensions, so Volvo S60, Mondeo, some sort of Lexus might be worth a look.

Sorry guys, should have states that I'm not looking to equal the 7 series at all.

Basically something I can use without the worry of a set of brakes costing me over a grand, or a set of tyres for that matter. If I can do this for the most part then using the 7 is a bit of an occasion then I'm happy.

At the moment I'm using my car as a jack of all trades, that includes tip runs, to and from stables down shonky roads and these activities risk ripping seats, bursting fancy suspension etc.

I'm thinking I might be better chopping the 7 in and adding 5k and get some sort of jeep.

Thanks for that! I'll have a proper look shortly.

Mileage varies anything between 12 and 16k a year. A fair few long journeys though so somewhere that's nice to be and won't have me feeling broken at the end of it.
