looking for recommendations for casual gourmet dining spots in the capital for a foodie friend who's visiting on a limited budget.

found a few places online [bao and bing, flor, bancone, alpes] but could use ones from those who live/work/visit often.

also a decent but authentic sushi / japanese would go down well, this doesn't have to fit the budget ethos if good enough.

cheers.

Decent and affordable sushi, although Brit-owned: Moshi-Moshi at Liverpool Street station, Dozo South Kensington/Soho or Hare and Tortoise High St Kensington/Bloomsbury

Sasa Sushi near Angel was very good the one time I went there. Not cheap mind.

Just had lunch at Dozo, very good as usual

Another authentic and affordable sushi option is the Japan Centre at Picadilly Circus. In summer it’s nice to take away and eat in Soho Square

Casual gourmet dining for foodies on a limited budget? That is a new niche!

What is the budget?

As mentioned, Dozo on Old Compton St is good. However, once you get into it, it's really not that cheap.

Dozo own Sushi Eatery round the corner which is all you can eat for £20 and good quality. Better option if you're on a budget.

Japan Centre as stated is great and if you go a couple of hours before closing they do huge (30%-50%) discounts on the sushi and there's usually still loads to choose from.
