Hi,

Anyone know if the 5PW engine will run okay on the 5JJ carbs? Basically it's the same engine, but I'm just wondering about the intake ports.

Thanks,

Ivaan

It won’t have the wiring for a cdi if it runs on injection will it?

Hi Tom,

I think I can swap over all the electrics from the 5JJ straight to the 5PW. The rotor / pick-up might be different, but should be a straight swap?

Cheers,

Engine should be fine but as Tom says it will be something electrical that gets grumpy.

Has the injected bike got a cam position sensor? The 5VY does (I think) not sure about 5PW.

Is it going in a bike or a BEC? Not sure on the mounting holes.

It's going into my Caterham R 1 BEC.

The lump is the same, so mounting points shouldn't be a problem.

I don't think there's a cam sensor on the 5PW engine.

Engine itself is basically the same as the first two carb models. Even the throttle bodies are basically modified carbs.

If I swap to throttle bodies, would I need to change the fuel pump?

If there's a return, I'd either have to route back just upstream of the pump, or possible need to change the fuel tank with one with a return inlet?

After some further research...
The 5PW head is different from the 5JJ. The inlet ports are shorter, so the carbs won't fit. Also the top mounting point on the LHS is in a slightly different position on the head.
I'd have to use throttle bodies, which would mean changing fuel pump, fixing a return line and changing the tank. Then there's the engine loom and control unit, plus altering the engine frame to pick up on the changed mounting point.
I've decided to refurbish the 5JJ head and use it on the 5PW block. This way there's minimal work required
